Question Amber headlight & turn signal conversion for 96GT

Hello Everyone,

You've got a great site here. Glad to see there are some other Mustang owners in OZ. I will be moving down in March and bringing my 96GT Convertible with me. My question is how to get my headlights and turn signals modified to comply with OZ rules. I am bringing it under SOFA rules (Status of Forces Agreement), so I don't have to convert to right hand drive. However, I still need to fix the headlights so they point left and the turn signals to flash amber. Right now all my tail lights are red and I am told I need to get the turn signals to flash amber. I hope some of you have been through this process and can lead me in the right direction! The American parts stores I have called are clueless as to how to make a conversion like that. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You dont have to convert your car to right hand drive due to SOFA ??? Never heard of that rule ? I think you might have trouble insuring it ! Plus your re-sale will be nothing coz no one else could buy it unless it was converted.

Conversions are much more than lights. US cars do not comply to our side intrusion laws either. You also need to put indicators on the side of the car. Windscreen also has to comply to Oz standards as well

Amber tail lights.... You have to buy Export Mustang lights and tail lights which are the same as the ones on the Japanese cars. (See my gallery for photos) You probably wont get them in the US. You will have to use someone down here like CrossOver Conversions or Mustang Australia. I know some other parts suppliers too if you cant get them.

Late model parts are hard to come by down here. Feel free to yell out if you need some contacts. I have been through most of it before. Your soon going find out how rare your car is down here

OzPony,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, no conversion required due to the fact that the car MUST be exported at the end of my tour (I'm US Navy). It is against the law for me to sell it anyway except to another American servicemember. As for insurance, Just Car Insurance gave me a very reasonable quote on it, said they do a lot of cars like mine.

I hadn't heard about the side indicators. No one had mentioned that yet. But I would appreciate the names of the parts suppliers you have to order the tail light kits from. I contacted Crossover Conversions and they said they could do it but the price seemed a little steep. I'd rather order the parts and do it myself if I can. You're right, no one in the US has any of the parts I need.

Also, would my current windscreen not comply?

Thanks again, and cheers.

Seems you don't have to convert it to RHD I'd be suprised if you have to comply to any other Australian rules like windscreen ??? Are you sure you need amber tail lights ??? Which state are you going to ? If its the NT I wouldn't even worry about it. They dont even have speed limits there.

So you thought CrossOver were expensive..... Get use to it ! You forget your driving a $50K car down here If I were you I'd bring in some stuff in the trunk of your car and sell it. You could make some good money. (Ford Racing gears and manifolds etc....)

Ok... Late model Parts suppliers....

Mustang Australia - Tel :+61 2 9438 5300 (I find them expensive)

CrossOver - Tel : +61 3 9753 5822 (Reasonable price if you know them !)

Mustang Country Down Under - Tel : +61 3 5422 2703 (Really nice guy)

Mustangs R Us (Graham Folwell) - Tel : +61 3 9752 9081 ( Ask for Graham - Super guy) If he can't help you ask him for Rosco's number.

Thats all the numbers I have here at work. Let me know if they are no good and I'll go through my "black book" at home I also know a guy who is parting out a couple of 95 and 98's.

Finally, I'd join your local Mustang Club. There won't be many late models but they will still be able to help you out. Plus you get to cruize with them !

Going to NSW around Newcastle area. The rules as to what I have to comply with are vague. I have called everyone from DOTARS to the RTA to the guys who actually do the Blueslips and I haven't gotten the same info twice. So right now I am going with headlights and turn signals. If they want anything else changed, I'll have to deal with it later. The car won't actually arrive till around May so I'll have some time to check around once I arrive. For now I just needed to know that somebody could at least do the headlight and taillight mods.

Thanks again for all the contact numbers. I will start doing some checking. And good suggestion about the parts, I know I have some allowance I am allowed to bring in the trunk so I will take advantage of that!

And I'll definitely look into the Mustang Club, sounds like a good time:thumbsup
