How you fellas doin?
Im looking at getting a 65/66 Mustang but the only problem in front of me is the lack of safety features besides the seat belt. I was wonderin if there was any way that safety features such as air bags or ABS brakes could be installed after I but the car. If you can do you guys know anybody in Melb. that would do it?
If this sounds totally ludicrous thas cool, was a bit of a long shot but any help would be awesome.

Most of the safety features of modern cars are built in…….i.e. plastic dash crumple zones and such. You will never get air bags in a car that has an under dash air conditioning from the factory………………..
Now for the good part, cars were built much better back in the day (not that the unibody is a good example of that), you can get a 3 point seatbelt (the lap belt wont help when your face hit’s the metal steering wheel and dash) and you can upgrade the breaks to be like modern car…..the restomod market is becoming much more popular and with it some modern advantages in the old cars.
If safty is a really big factor then buy a newer mustang plus you wont have to worry about reliability…….but a sharp 66 would be sooo cooool.

- Shaken....Not Stirred 2003 Mach I Auto Torch Red - Sold
-1988 Ford Mustang GT Convertible, 331 Trick Flow Stroker with a Tremec 3550....oh yea and a 1.6 liter V-TECH motor to work the convertible top.
- 1966 Inline 6……..the pile of parts car!
For brake upgrades you should go to Hoppers Stoppers in Melbourne. They are brake experts, especially on US cars ! http://www.hoppers.com.au
As for air bags ! Well, County answered your question. It would be possible but would cost big dollars. It would be cheaper to import an 05 if you want the classic look

Yeah I didnt have the biggest aspirations for installing airbags.
So it seems like the go is to put in better seat belts and upgrade the brakes as much as I can.
Anybody got any other ideas concerning this topic? What about gettin ABS brakes or is that just ridiculous?
I haven't heard of anybody putting ABS on a 60's stang but it should be possible ,not easy but possible .You may be able to lift a complete system out of a falcon .I think it would be a pretty big job I'll be interested to know how you get on.

What about that '66 with the XR8 conversion Frank ?? Its a green colour and has XR8 engine, transmission and computer. I thought it had the XR8 brake system too ??? I can't remember.....
I'll check at Hanging Rock or All Ford Day.

i'm looking for 65 stang with an air bag! I know reliable issues come in place, aside from that, and money, is it physically possible? Can you remove the steering wheel, and install a newer mustang steering wheel, with an air bag?

Yes it is possible and yes it will be expensive. The air bag will require more than just the steering wheel. Air bags use front impact sensors, air bag ecu module, vehicle speed sensors etc. It will be no easy task.
If money is no object, you can do anything you want to a car.

what you can probbly do if money is not an issue is to get a modern car with abs, airbags etc.. and rebody it with the mustang body, you will need a car with very similar wheel base so u get the proper dimentions, technecly this way is the safest way to go, ive never seen it done with a mustang, but there are many car replicas that are based on moden chassis (new cars), so the best thing to do is to find a kit car builder willing to make this converstion, get a new ford i don't know what models u have over there, with the abs airbags, strip the body and try to place the mustang panels on it, it will require alot of modification, time and money, remmber u will need only the body of a mustang you can get alot of fiberglass parts too, but at the end this is the best way to go, i personally would just upgrade the brakes, get a car with power steering, umm change the seats to later model stangs 69+ they have headrest and 3 point seatbeats, thats bout it, anyways if u decide to rebody the car like i side above i would love to hear about it and see some pics
