Ford Australia has announced that they have stopped importing the US Mustang now that the Australian XR8 BA Falcon has been released with it's American 5.4-litre Boss 260 V8 powerplant. It produces a huge 260Kw compared to the Holden Commodore SS which tops 235Kw. The XR8 has now entered HSV areas and can compared to the Clubsport R8 which also produces 260Kw.
The new XR8 is only available in manual for the time being, as Ford works on a strengthened Auto transmission to handle the 5.4 litre !
(The Mustang was only imported for 8 months and less than 200 cars have been sold in this time.)

We actually had help from the US Mustang designers on the new BA Falcon. You can see the headlights and hood are a rip off of the Mustang.
The Mustang never sold well in Oz coz it was too expensive by the time you imported it from the US and then converted it to right hand drive. For half the price you could get the same performance or better in an Aussie car. (Eg. XR8, HSV, SS, Monaro etc)

It is probably a bit short sighted on fords part with the sucess of the Monaro (Pontiac GTO) Ford Australia has left it self without a HiPo Coupe/convertable in its range.Sales would not be very high but there is a niche market there

You are so right Krankie ! With the Monaro selling so well, wouldn't you think they would keep the Mustang to compete with it ???

That car looks AWESOME! I've always been a fan of larger/4-door performance cars... Ford needs to build those here since they dropped the Taurus SHO...
