Default 69 GT 500 Cobra. Good deal?????

OK ladies and gentleman, here is the deal. I will try to explain this as best as I can, so bear with me. I will also include pics of the car.

1 I see an ad in my local paper for a 69 GT 500 for $4999.
2 I call the number and it will not go through for days.
3 I send an email
4 I recieve an e mail with a pic of the car. It appears to be a 67, not a 69. The car is gorgeous. (In my opinion anyway)
5 He says he is in TEXAS and would like to deal through yahoo payment center. Although the car CLEARLY has NY registration and inspection on it. (I can deal with that, though I am skeptical)
6 I e mail him back that I would like to speak with him on the phone because I have many questions.
7 He e mails me back that he has a hearing disability and would rather use e mail and he sends more pics of the car. It seems immaculate. He also sends me VIN numbers for the car and says it has 90000 miles on it.
8 I have a few questions for you guys. Maybe you can help me.

Here are my questions.

1. Is this to good to be true?
2. Is it possible a car in this shape could be so cheap?
3. I have the VIN numbers. Is there a way to see if the VIN is a real number
4. Is it a 69 or 67?
5. It sounds like a scam to me. What do you guys think? All opinions are welcomed.

Wow, she is beautiful, but that price and the run around, I would be skeptical. I have heard of situations where some cars or objects do bring people pain. My Grandma hates Mustangs just because she had a close friend die in one. She was always trying to get me to get rid of mine. So I have seen cars and objects almost given away. I would email him with as many questions as possible to verify first. Dose it run, what kind of work dose it need, ect....How far of a drive is it, close enought to go and see, and if not it's no big deal? Don't know if this helps or not, but good luck and keep us posted.

2 sites I found for VIN #
www.CARFAX.com
www.vehicleidentificationnumber.com
found them typing in VIN number on Google.com

I think you are right sound like a HUGE scam to me. It sounds like the standard internet scam about someone from overseas wanting to buy your car only reversed. I have dealt with a couple of these types of scam involving someone who is suppossedly "hearing impaired" they utilize the ttdy operators on a relay call and they call up a business and want to buy some large amount of what they sell in my case it was tires and they want to pay with Visa or M/C but the minute I tell them we only except a US postal Money order I get silence and then the relay operator say "That's odd they just hung up". If you want to test him out tell him you want to pick the car up in person and you will pay cash for it on the spot. My guess if its a scam you will never hear from them again.
Good Luck and let us know what happens

Just had another thought find out exactly where the car is and post its location I bet there is a fellow AFM member near by that would go check the car out just to check out the validity of the deal and condition of the car. That would be another option to scare him with tell him you have someone locally who can check out the car for you.

Zed,
Great idea about asking his exact location and sending a fellow AFM member to check it out. I just sent him an e mail asking that.
Also, the VIN number had a "Q" in it. I always thought vin numbers didnt have "Q" in it and it is also 11 digits as opposed to the usual 17 digits. But the car is much older. I wonder if the older cars had less numbers and "Q"s in them.
Also, No one has answered me yet. Is it a 69 or 67??

Provide the VIN and we can get you the details of what it is...

I believe the first digit will indicate the year.

It's a 67 based on the VIN.

1965forAC, thanks for the help and the numbers seem to jive and It does seem legit.

BUT, he is insisting that I use this YAHOO finance thing and refuses to talk to me on the phone and I just got the e mail about his kid needing an operation and this is the only way it could be done.

is it worth paying the 20 bucks and running it through one of the websites that charge for it.
Maybe that girl Veronica can help me here. I will send her a message.

I'd sure walk away from the deal. Even $49,990 won't buy you a good, original GT350, let alone a GT500. Just the motor is worth $4900. SCAM!

If it like around here, the people that work at the newspaper get paid for letting their buddies know when a good deal comes up. By the time the ad hits the newpaper, they are already sold! I hope it's for real, that would be a buy.

I agree but don't get carried away. I found a very rust free '66' Ranchero from Cal with the 289 (bad motor), air and a 4-speed for $700. Found a '37' LaSalle (cheap Cadillic) that was also very rust free/ solid all aroung for $3000. The rear fenders still un-bolted and they showed no signs of rust
Them gems can still be found.

I would be very cautious.... as the old saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Red flags....
#1 - Since when does someone not want to talk on the phone wen they are selling a car.
#2 - Also, there is probably no recourse through Yahoo as there is with paypal/ebay.
#3 - Hard of hearing??? and now his son needs an operation??? { B U L L S H I T}
#4 - There is an ass for every seat....i'd pay to have a local mustang expert go an make an evaluation on the vehicle.
