Default 1968 Mustang vin # confusion

heres one that will make you scratch your head.
I bought a 68 Mustang the the vin #'s are all the same XXXX1096XX on the aprons, door tag, and title but the cowl vin tag is XXXX1196XX the guys at Marti report say that it must have been tampered with ect. but I have been dealing mustangs for 30 years and never ran across this number propblem before. This is where the saying so close, but yet so far comes from! possible that Ford made a misstamp? and if so what can I do or is there anyone who I can contact, for this tag in the windshild has got to match the title when I go to DMV or they will just tell me to go away. I understand these dash tags are not reproducded by anyone, so how could it be that this one car has two different # s plus the tag looks 100 percent like other 68s Mustangs I have, and it looks to have never been removed!
Thanks for anyhelp

Sounds like another mis-stamp since all the other digits line up, Ford did have problems with that. I offered advice in another thread on here last week to someone else who had a similar problem.

I take it Marti has told you the VIN with the "0" is correct? Then I would try this place for another dash tag, Tags Backeast, Trim Tags Backeast, Data Plates, A.G.Backeast. We make tags for AMC, Buick, Cadillac, Camaro, Chevelle, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Corvette, Dodge, DeSoto, Edsel, Ford, Frazer, La Salle, Henry J, Kaiser, Lincoln, Mercury, Mustang, Oldsmobile

I know of a few people who had to make new tags too since they were damaged or missing. Not something you want to advertise though!

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

Hello. The reason that this discrepancy has escaped anyone's notice for nearly 40 years is because, really, what that tag says doesn't matter. You take the title and the application for transfer down to the DMV, you give them some money and they transfer the title. If the vin that they have on record is the one on the title, that's all that matters, because that's all that they have to look at. If the number which is stamped on the on the fender aprons and door tag is also the same number that's on the title, and all of that matches up with Ford's original production records according to Marti Auto Works, then that's the car that you have. If anyone tries to imply that the vin of the car is actually the oddball one on the dash tag, the response to that would be that no car with that vin was ever even built by Ford. If it was me, I would knock that tag off, destroy it, and throw the shredded remnants of it in the trash and think no more of it until I could find someone that can reproduce tags that have somehow gotten lost.
