Default Help in IDing 1968 mustang, can you tell me what this is?

My daughter wanted me to look at an old mustang across the street from us and a couple of doors down. It has been sitting for at least 10 years. I believe it is a 68 hardtop, with a blue stripe down the fender and wraps around the vent impression behind the door. I am including a picture of the fender emblem. It says Cobra Jet 428 GT. I have a 75 Mustang II and I usually am on the Mustang II section and I don't know much about the earlier years. If this is what I think it is it should be fairly rare, no? I can't see the grill, it is up against the garage door. How much should this car go for? Chrome is pitted bad, paint is beyond saving but no rust visible except surface rust. Thanks for your help, Stretch

Yes, that can be a VERY rare car.........as long as it is real.

They only made 221 "R' code 428 coupes in 1968. 102 were 4 spds and 119 were C6 autos.

You need to confirm the 5th digit of the VIN as a "R".

The car could be a fake though as the 428 emblems are available from the Mustang parts suppliers and someone could have put it on the car after the fact.

I have no clue on value as I've never seen a 428 equipped 68 coupe come up for sale. It would be more than a 390 but less than a 428 fastback as the coupes have less value.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

I don't think it is fake. It belongs to an older gentleman and has been sitting for a very long time. The emblems are weathered to match the rest of the car. I live in So. Cal. cars don't rust much here and there is at least one classic Mustang on every street. I do inspections for the county and am on the streets every day for the last 26 years. I had a friend about a year ago wanted an older Mustang to fix up. I gave him a list of 60+ Mustangs just sitting in one week.

The VIN on a 68 is visible through the windshield on the passenger side.

The 5th digit, the engine code, has to be a "R" to be a real 428. Being a Cali car the VIN should be "8R01Rxxxxxx".

If the guy is older and has held onto the car this long he may know exactly what he has, just keep that in mind.
