My 16 year old son paid for a '66 Mustang from a friend of the family with his own money and now wants me to sell it to get him a Fast and Furious type car. Now I think we paid too much for it from my experience trying to sell it. I have been trying to sell it for $2000, which is actually less than we paid. I have learned it was originally a 6 cylinder 3spd car, which now sits with the 289 3spd. It's a Minnesota car with what I have found, quite a bit of damage to the floor and trunk pans. The car was running until the flywheel got chummed up and now I am stuck with a car that I want to sell will no longer start, unless I feel like hooking up the tow strap and pull start it.
So help if you could with how much is this thing worth, should I part it out? I have extra parts too but haven't seemed to be able to find anyone who was looking for anything. I have an extra engine and transmission, but what can I reasonably expect to get from them? I have been told here that a toploader 4spd is worth a grand. Is that so? And if what are an extra set of headers worth? I also have seats albeit I am not sure what they came out of? So if there is anyone that can help with any encouragement I would greatly appreciate it.
And if you would look at the '69 Lincoln I need to sell too, I must have paid way too much for that too. Which is sad cause its got a brand new crate 460. I am considering taking the 460 out and putting it in something I could quickly sell to recoup some of my losses.
Hello. As a car, I'm afraid that what you have is not worth very much. It could, however, have some stuff that might be worth a little something. A good top loader would probably bring something in the range of a grand, assuming that everything is ok. The doors of the car would also be worth about that if they are in good shape, as in no rust, no speaker holes, etc.. Good original fenders, again, without rusty patches, a bunch of bondo, etc.. are worth a couple of hundred bucks each. If it has an 8 inch rear end, that would be worth something in the three or four hundred range. A 9 inch rear end would be worth something also, how much would depend on what it came out of. The problem with parting it out would be that you would pretty much have to disassemble the car and have a place to keep all of that stuff for a good while. If it was me, I would go through the car and figure out what all it had that actually has any value and ebay the car as a parts car with a list of the good stuff it has. It would really help the car a bunch if it would start by itself while sitting still. Hope that helps.
If my son wanted a fast and furious car(ricer) I'd slap him upside his head. That car is a classic don't part it out. They make replacement panels for it.Sell it to someone who will fix it.

If your son bought it with his own money, let him sell it and see what he gets for it. I know what these Northern Winters can do to a car. Nothing really wrong with a "Ricer" but you know he is going to want to modify it to duplicate the movie. Somebody is going to have to have a reality check. At sixteen, get him a slow moving 6 banger.
Dave
id give you 2000 for it if i could get it here, but border fees would kill me and i have no way to transport it i've always wanted a mustang around that year...i always thought they were worth more than that being such a classic... altho the damage does bring the value down... i dunno what to say, its only worth what a person is willing to pay (thats what my dad always told me)

yeah i would also buy it if it came with a toploader 4 speed....thats probobly a great car sad to see it have to be sold for such little if the kid really wanted a fast car that mustang has so much potential!
i paid 3600 for my 66 coupe. original 6 cyl (and still is), 3 spd auto, and no other options. wimbledon white with red int. i did pay a little too much, i found out that the cowl leaked and only looked good because it had a thick coat of body filler all around it, and the floors were rusted out. they felt solid because he laid thin sheet metal over them. but the body was in good condition, and i only need to work on 3 small spots. ive seen classic cars go for cheaper in different parts of the country than here (tampa bay), but i dont think you should part it out, and should try to convince your son to keep it. im 17 and theyre great cars, easy to work on and much cooler than any import ive seen, and im glad im taking to time to restore mine myself.

Im 17 and also restoring mine myself its a 65 coupe and Im a truck guy but in a car I would pick this over a ricer any day of the week! He should keep it or try and sell it himself IMO.
Tell him the imports are slow and will go down in value a early mustang can only go up in value.I use to have imports i got tired of spending a lot of money for little power.I have seen many early mustangs with some work beat a evo or sti and it was cheaper the them.
