Swap inline-6 for 2.3L in 1965 Mustang? I've owned my '65 convertible since 1973 and I drive it every day down here in Texas. I crossed the 300k mile threshold on 1/1/00 (on purpose). In 1976 I improved the drivetrain to a 1968 200CI with its full-synchro transmission and it's been rock-solid. The current engine was rebuilt in 1989 and is still going strong but, frankly, the fuel-efficiency stinks (16-18mpg).
With an eye towards the future, and in the interest of wasting less fuel, it seems an early-90's 2.3L 4-cylinder would be a consideration for my next engine. It at least has the benefit of fuel-injection and electronic ignition. I know this is a radical idea, putting a smaller engine in a Mustang, but I'm no speed freak. In fact, I practice the rudiments of hypermiling and the 30mpg I've heard from those using this engine is intriguing. A turbo version of the 2.3 would, of course, be sweet but I like to keep things simple. This car doesn't even have AC. (Hey! It's a convertible.)
So my question is if this is an easy swap or am I looking at a mammoth money pit? Information from anyone with a little technical expertise in this regard would be most welcome.
One more thing... If anyone would like to suggest an alternative drive-train that suits my peculiar needs, then sing out.
And thanks! |
