Default Swap inline-6 for 2.3L in 1965 Mustang?

I've owned my '65 convertible since 1973 and I drive it every day down here in Texas. I crossed the 300k mile threshold on 1/1/00 (on purpose). In 1976 I improved the drivetrain to a 1968 200CI with its full-synchro transmission and it's been rock-solid. The current engine was rebuilt in 1989 and is still going strong but, frankly, the fuel-efficiency stinks (16-18mpg).

With an eye towards the future, and in the interest of wasting less fuel, it seems an early-90's 2.3L 4-cylinder would be a consideration for my next engine. It at least has the benefit of fuel-injection and electronic ignition. I know this is a radical idea, putting a smaller engine in a Mustang, but I'm no speed freak. In fact, I practice the rudiments of hypermiling and the 30mpg I've heard from those using this engine is intriguing. A turbo version of the 2.3 would, of course, be sweet but I like to keep things simple. This car doesn't even have AC. (Hey! It's a convertible.)

So my question is if this is an easy swap or am I looking at a mammoth money pit? Information from anyone with a little technical expertise in this regard would be most welcome.

One more thing... If anyone would like to suggest an alternative drive-train that suits my peculiar needs, then sing out.

And thanks!

Well to put it in you'll need some fabricated motor mounts. The trans maybe easier as ford used the same style of mount for decades. You'll need the harness for the computer. Your existing radiator should be fine. The hood clearance should also be okay. There's been harder swaps. What about an overdrive trans for the six ?

The turbo would hit the shock tower on the passenger side you'll have to make a new turbo manifold for it.You'll have to fab up a lot parts and wiring.

I am thinking similar to your ideas but being broke my 66 project will be some in the future.

I was thinking of using the newer model 3.8 6 which some members report getting mid 30’s MPG. In the lighter 60’s era cars this should also be an improvement. Outside the fact wrecked v-6’s are easy to come buy this might be be an eiser swap with more aftermarket support and is likely to yield near to better MPG then working with the 4 banger.

Just food for thought……and buy the way welcome to the forum!

Well yes it can be done. I did it. If you put a 2.3 w/o a turbo Iit will fit right in there. But if you put a 2.3 with a turbo well? I hear if you use a stock turbo exhaust manifold it will fit. But I used one with a header and had to get rid of those ugly shock towers. Here are some picture of the swap.

Or just do to here and see all the picturs and updates!

What about the 3.8 with the blower from a super coupe thunder bird or the 1.8 out of a miata or a rotary.

Thanks, everyone, for your response. I'm encouraged that someone has at least tried the 6cyl->4cyl swap but I don't think the turbo is for me. I think perhaps I'll roam the site for more info on that "overdrive transmission" idea.
