Thats why its a hobby not a investment or job you might get you money back if you sell it but would take some years. But what good is money if you don't spend it.
That is exactly why you should spend your money on the RIGHT classic car (ie..rare or popular)....is almost like real estate, location, location, location.
Jay Leno has a 65 Shelby gt350 he said the car was better then a stock he bought it early 90s and the value keeps going up on it.Really only thing different on parts is in 79 most of the dealers carried parts for the early mustangs,Now everything is mail order or off a site but theres a lot more after market/custom parts out there for them.

Not really - I wrecked my '71 in 1979 and the dealer didn't carry any parts - they didn't stock anything more than 5 years old. I occasionally would get something that was found leftover on a shelf that they hadn't sold. I think whatever I did find was something that really interchanged with a newer model. (dimmer switches, turn signal levers, etc.)
Autozone didn't exist - Auto Shack was about it.
I had to scrounge around junk yards to get parts for my '71 way back then.
About the only mail order guys were Glazier's Mustang Barn, Larry's Thunderbird, Tony Branda, and Dallas Mustang. I think Maier Racing was making good fiberglass stuff, too.

The 71 fastback my dad had he got a lot of parts from junkyards. this was the late 80s his was a plain jane inline 6 car. But he put the mach1 honeycomb between the tail lights a console the deluxe door panels and the spoiler and louvers.

I didnt think it would take too much to clean up the car a little bit but its all starting to add up.
upholestry Kit for front and back seats 164
front windshield seal 20
rear window seal 20
2 seatbelts 48
door lock gromets 2
original owners manual up opened 20
hood seal 5
Horn retention ring 2
glove box screw set 5
running board screw set 5
shifter box glass 10
Meeting trustworty people in the process Priceless!!!!
It all adds up, but I figure for the price, keeping original look really isnt that expensive. Plus, it all adds top the enjoyment of the ride. I think it evens itself out.

Hi Clay How's that project coming along? I know what you mean.I quit the tally on the first time around ( This is the second) which started with me wanting to get the power steering working. I got lifters and pushrods yet for the motor. Then paint materials for the exterior. ...and thanks MCRParts I added a couple more since 67 Cougar and a realllly beat up 66 Mustang convertible.

Hey Rod, Its coming along great. I got all the parts either at the house or in the mail to me. Plan on using my sunday off to get most of it on, or maybe some time today here at the dealership if we are slow After that only thing that will be left is to clean up the engine compartment. thankfully the car has a strong engine and great paint job. do need to get a bit of over spray off the window trim. but thats free to get done

I just got my '65 last week on a Monday and already I have $$ in the front suspension/steering rebuild kit that we hope to put on next week (or the following, my son's b-day is next week!). We were hoping that we would only need about $200 worth of parts and what we ended up having to get was double! (plus cleaning, 2 key blanks, owners manual, octane boost to burn out old gas, thermosat/gasket/sealant, couple gal of antifreeze, radiator fix...) and I have only had the car a little over a week!! Holy cow!! Not to mention she will need new carpet, new paint which will also involve ALL NEW window gaskets, gotta get the cowl fixed, front brake conversion.....I am a little scared!! But in the end my car will ROCK!
