Default 1966 Mustang has no data tag but needing help with interior

I have a 1966 Ford Mustang with a 289 c-code car, reason for buying car was it has had the floors and back quarters redone. Only problem with car is there is no dataplate. It looks like the interior was redone to black but as you can tell looking at the dash it was originly red. I am going to redo the interior to red but the question is should the dash pad be black or red? I was thinking that slim chance it was a 2 tone interior but I dont think the dash would be red would it?

1966 Ford Mustang 289 - Granite City, Illinois

Only info for the car is just the vin number 6F07C191923 which only shows basic info on the car, who knows maybe it was a previous owner here. Located in Illinois now, the previous owner was ILL also.
Any help would be helpful

Thank You
Joshua

Normally the dashpad would be the red. If it was a two-tone the metal dash itself would be a white or parchment. Ibelieve this to be true. I'm sure others will offer more info. best of Luck

Hello. The pictures look like a red car with black standard interior. One way to find out would be to go into one of the front wheel wells, up near where the hood hinge bolts stick through, and knock some of the undercoating off and see what color is underneath it. That's what color your car was originally. You can look at the bottom edge of the dash, down near where the courtesy lights are mounted and see if the paint looks like it's thinning out to something other than black. Since the last person that painted the car did not open the trunk or doors to do it, he probably wasn't real picky about the bottom of the dash either. If yes, start slowly removing paint from a small area that isn't visible from sitting normally in the seat. The last color is the original color of the interior. Hope that helps.

The build sheet was taped to the wiring harness under the dash that would show everything the car came with if its still there and readable.

I decided to head to storage and look at the car a little bit today and under the dash and misc is red and can tell the headliner was red also had a little bit of the old headliner around one of the windows. The wiring harness has been replace and no build sheet anywhere
I have look around at different spots on car and can tell the car was an orange red so it was a signalflare red color car. I may go with red and white for interior just to break up the color a little but undecided. At least I can sell the black seat covers , dash , and new headliner.
With how I work it will probably sit for a while but plan on buying new chrome inside and outside pieces for now till I can setup a date with my painter to sand and paint my car. Will update my gallery with the work in progress when the time comes. I plan on keeping this car till the day I die , Just wish the car had the data plate but probably have one made since I know most of the data that would be on it just not sure on the date and market for the car.

Thank You all for your help
Joshua

Hi again. If you could pm me the second and last six digits of the vin of your car I could tell you the production date. There were three reds used on the 66 mustangs, Poppy Red, Rangoon Red and Candyapple Red. The Candyapple Red was almost a maroon, so that's not it. The Poppy Red was a straight up bright orange and the Rangoon Red was the only one that was something that one would look at and call red. It does have sort of an orangey tint to it, but it is clearly a bright red.Hope that helps.

Hi again. If, by 'not many', you mean 87 different interior schemes and 28 different paint colors, not counting special order colors, then yes, I would agree that there were not many different schemes available.

Default In the pictures you show....

The picture on your web site shows dark red sun visors - were they original to the car?

For what it is worth, I have a candyapple red '66 with dark red interior - the '66 red and '67 red interior are the same colors.

The only thing about a '66 dark red interior is that it is about three or four shades of red.

The seats and headliner are a wine color of red, the carpet is maroon, and the door panels and kick panels sorta match. The dash and doors are a dark red, and the dashpad is maroon. The sun visors do match the headliner.

I didn't really like mine at first, but it grows on you.

The sunvisors I would have no ideal but figure it was probably original. I bet that was how my car was like yours Cobra6. I wasnt thinking about the headliner I was figuring it was old and ratty looking with what was left of it around the windows and it was actually darker red like the sunvisors. If I am going to spend that much for the interior think I might actually go for the red and white for my personal preference or go with a straight color. I am hoping this other job offer comes through so I can actually get money saved up to start on my car quicker.

Thank You all for your help so far it has been very helpful.
