ford 429 engine

Hey i recently ran by an ad for a 429 ford motor from 1972....it did not say what it was from. It has a c6 with it. They only want $500 for it...and my questions are

1. How much horsepower does a 429 have. and are all 429 motors super cobra jet engines?

2. would it fit in my mustang (of course i'd have to buy heavier springs)

3. is it worth rebuilding and putting in my 68 stang.

The only Ford 429 engine from that era I know of is the Blue Crescent Hemi that Ford built for NASCAR in 1970 and put in the Boss 429 Mustang. I have heard (rumors only) that the engine was too pickey to run on the street so it didn't sell very well.

The 429 (385 series) came in several configurations. It was available starting in late 1968 through the 70's. There was a base engine, a Police Intercepter version, a Cobra Jet, and a Super Cobra Jet. The Boss 429 was available in 1969 and 1970 in the Mustang and Cougar. Very few were Super Cobra Jet versions, and even less in the Boss version. Ford only needed to produce 500 of them to make them legal (Boss)for Nascar competition. There also was a heavy duty truck version made.

Not sure on the base 429, probably around 300-325 with a 4 barrel. The CJ I think was 355, and the SCJ and Boss were rated at 375, although probably a little under rated. Also, the Boss came in 2 versions, an "S" version and a "T" version. I am in the process of finishing up a rebuild on an "S" version at work.

72 its from anything but a mustang get the casting numbers off the block and heads we'll tell you what is it. the 429 came a normal one a thunder jet a cobra jet and super cobra jet the cobra jet and super cobra jet are 4 bolt mains rest are 2 bolts. It depends on which heads it has and if your willing to buy different ones if needed they can be a torque monster. The super cobra jet was rated 375hp and 450 foot pounds.

72 429 made a rated 208 hp @ 4400rpm and 322 ft/lbs of torque @ 2800rpm with an 8.5 to 1 compression ratio. If you want to bump it to 10.5 let me know I got the old heads laying around. Also the motor is very heavy but I'm with you I'm putting a 460 in a 67 Cougar. It'll never hook up but the smokeshow ought to be worth something!

Old and in the way.

I believe that rating is for the 2V engine. The 4V had more ponies.

Look at the top and click on Engine specs and it gives all the 429s
along with all the other ford engine families.

Actually that figure I posted earlier WAS for the 4bbl. The main reason for the low numbers is compression. Now for 69 with 10-10.5 to 1( the heads I was referring to) and 4bbl according to the book: 360hp @4600 and 476 ft/lbs @2800 with a stock cam. These motors make easy power. The design is really close to the boss 302 ( obviously larger).
