Default LED tailight bulbs

I was thinking about replacing the bulbs in my tailights on my 1967 mustang with the LED type plug in bulbs. I cannot afford the circuit board type LED's at this point.
Will the LED replacement bulbs be noticeably brighter? Are they worth the extra cost?

Have you considered the halogen replacement bulbs for the standard 1157? I'm about to put a set in my 65 convertible. I've heard pro and con about excessive heat from these bulbs, but some folks I know that have used them in their own Mustangs have convinced me that they are safe. I know that NPD sells them for around $16 a pair. I've attached a clip from their catalog showing these bulbs.

Hope this helps and all the best!

I put the LEDs in the taillights on my '66 - I also painted the inside of the tailight housing white to reflect better.
I was afraid I was going to get rear-ended on a sunny afternoon because the original lamps were dim, so I think they are worth the price.

I think I bought mine off an eBay store for about $15 or so.

Got any pictures to show what they look like now? I am interested in seeing how they look in both day and night with the inner housing painted.

I never got any decent pics - my flash kept going off on my digital camera - or I needed an exposure longer than I could hold without a tripod. I have got my car on blocks doing the Arning drop and replacing the front suspension right now.

The reason I painted the inside of the housing white was when I replaced my parking lights on y '71 Ranchero, the housings were painted white on the replacement pair, and it made big difference - even with regular bulbs.

I think Mizzou Mike was going to post some pics on the forum with the LEDs and white housings - I will search and see.

I agree with Andrewmp6---start saving up for th Mustang Project LED set. I put them in my 67 and my buddy said they were so bright, he didn't like driving behind me!
BIG,BIG difference in brightness---much safer (they look pretty cool, too)!!

I installed the Halogen bulbs in my 67 and painted the insides of the housings with chrome spray paint. This was before the LEDs were on the market. My taillights and brake lights are much brighter than before. No melted lenses or any other heat related issues. I have an auto trans, so you know that the brake lights are always on at a traffic light.

Five years later and the same bulbs are still working. I bought an extra set of bulbs thinking that I'd be replacing them on a regular basis, but they are still on the shelf gathering dust.

I'm not saying that the LEDs aren't brighter, but the price is what bothers me. The Halogens produce a light that is on par with the new cars and that is good enough for someone to easily see in my opinion. The LEDs that are made to be a replacement bulb, from what I've seen, don't have the ability to use the reflective portion of the tail light housing because they are directional and the beams only face outward. This is something to consider.

The 1157H bulbs were originally designed for use on motorcycles. They should be available at cycle shops in addition to the Mustang part vendors.

I ended up painting the insides of my housings white and it made a big difference. My '71 Ranchero came with the inside of it's housings painted white, so I tried it on my Mustang with LED lights.

As far as I remember, I bought my LED tailight bulb on Autopartswarehouse online shop. They offered discounts that time. Lucky for me, I guess.
