I've had a few fun conversations at Ford shows. While checking out a nice coupe I walked into this conversation.
mustang owner 1: You know some people don't know that Ford made a '64 mustang before they made the '64.5
mustang owner 2: Really?!! You're right I've never heard that one.
me: I suppose you are talking about the 200 or so Mustangs made before the March 9th production start? Ford never officially made a '64 or a 64.5.
mo1: Huh? I'm not sure what you are talking about, but my title says my car is a '64.
me: Thats nice what does the VIN start with?
mo1: I don't know, its just a bunch of letters and numbers that don't mean nuthin'.
At this point he pulls out his registration and starts showing off where it says 1964 Mustang.
me: Again that's nice what number does the VIN start with?
mo1: It starts with a 5
me: The first number in a Ford VIN is the cars year.
mo1: You don't know what you're talking about. You're saying my car don't exist? It's sitting right there. (points to car)
me: I'm not saying that at all. Listen again to what I'm saying, the first number in your VIN is a 5. All early Mustangs had a VIN that starts with a 5 making them 65's. Some people do call them 64.5's but they are actually considered early 65's.
By this time the guy is starting to really get upset and yell that I'm to young to know what I'm talking about, muttering under his breath some choice words that can't be repeated here. I continue to look at his car (It was really nice). As I look under the hood and check out the VIN on the fender I noticed the 5th digit of the VIN was a C. As I walked away I said back to him nice '65 Mustang. Needless to say he left early in a rage.

Who would have thought that at a show someone just might know more than you. Nothing is more dangerous to yourself or your hobby than somone blathering about somehting they only think they know about. But aint it lovely when you catch somone trying to pull the wool over someones eyes?

There are a lot of miths out there that some new, uninformed car owners fall for. On the bright side, I heard a couple of real young kids describe why the Mustang motor we were looking at was not correct because of the angle of the power steering pump, they were right.

I stopped going to shows after 'an expert' was explaining to his wife about the 289 in my mustang (pointing at the 289 badges) who then said as he looked under the hood "wow that's the biggest 289 I've ever seen" to which I said "its a 351 cleveland". He then corrected me saying no no no...you see there (pointing to my 8 bolt high rise ford racing brushed aluminum valve covers) the valve covers give it away that its a 289 and then walked away spouting something about how a cleveland wouldn't even fit in a 65 mustang.
Sweet ride Nick start going to shows again I'd love to see it in person. I'm going to suggest that swap to my friend with a '65 fastback I've got the motor he's got the car. It doesn't even look like you modified the shock towers. Did you? Again sweet ride and thats the biggest 289 I've ever seen also LOL.
Nick don't feel bad i had a argument with a ford guy over a 460 small block he kept going on how a 460 is a big block.I kept telling him world makes a small block one he wouldn't believe me.
Hello. Nick, you know that the 351 Cleveland wasn't even available until the 1970 model year. Your car is a 65 so that's a just a funny looking 289 in there with the upper radiator hose stuck onto the wrong place. I've had people at shows 'explain' stuff to me a whole bunch of times since I was a teen-ager. I used to try to politely correct them, but realized that all I was accomplishing was getting myself laughed at by some 'guru' and 'car guy' buddies, so now, when someone says something retarded to me at a show, I just say something like ' Really? Cool!' and go on about my business.
a guy in the auto parts parking lot wanted to look at my VW New Bug, so I let him, then I started up the car and he proceded to tell me that it needed to go to the shop pronto! I was worried and juped out to see what the problem was, he told me that the motor was about to lock up and tried to explain the strange sound. it took me a minute to realize what he was talking about, he was hearing my deisel motor. i told him that the car was fine that it sounded odd because it was a deisel and not a gas motor. Well....he began to tell me that I was wrong, that there was no TDI emblem to indicate it, and that I was putting in the wrong fuel and had ruined my car. by this point i was getting pretty mad because he was trying to talk down at me like i was stupid!! so I poped open the fuel door and asked him to reas aloud what the sticker said to use, then opened the hood which was in the FRONT much to his dismay and asked him to point out the spark plug wires!! once i was quite certain that i had the final say i also told him that if he listened he would hear the turbo as i pulled away, thus fulfilling the missing TurboDieselInjected emblem (which for some reason they did not put on this model) needless to say i drove off happy to see his shocked look that he had been put in his place!
ok, this was a story about a VW and not a Mustang...sorry! but it fits in this thread so very nicely!
