Yesterday, I logged in and said that I purchased a mustang. As of today, I don't have anyway of picking the car up or storing the car until I get back from overseas. So, I haven't sent the seller any money yet because I am worried about him taking my money and selling the car to someone else. My questions are as follows: Does anyone know how I can protect myself from getting the shaft in this deal? Is there a way to secure my purchase? Something like a contract or some type of buying agreement I can make up? Stating that I purchased the car out right and the seller agrees to keep the car until I get home. Has anyone delt with anything like this before?
It is in Oklahoma. I live in Colorado. So I don't have anyone that can pick it up. I was hoping that there was some sort of legal document I could have them sign that says they can't sell the car once it is mine.
How long will you be overseas? If it will be awhile then the seller may not want to store the vehicle for you and I can't blame them. If something happens to your car while they have it they may be held responsible for it. It could be that they may want the garage or other space the vehicle occupies back soon too.
A transport company would be able to pick the car up and ship it to you. Rates vary amoung them so call around if you decide to use one.

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.
even a clear tittle cant protect you from him reselling it. depending on how long your gone he could file for abandonment. best thing to do would be to have someone ship it to you and get a storage facility while you are deployed. Thats what most of my friends and I did when on long deployments.

Hello. If you are unable to pick up the car in a timely manner then you are not ready to buy a car. A dealer might work with you for a couple of weeks because of having to wait that long for the truck to pick it up due to logistical problems on the scheduling, but there's no way an individual is going to have your car clogging up his garage or driveway for more than a few days, and it would be very unreasonable and unrealistic to expect anything else. If you are unable to take delivery of the car, you might want to just hold on and buy another car when you are able to go get it. That's part of buying a car. Pay for the car, go get the car, have a place to keep the car, etc... It's kind of a package.
If that were the case, I wouldn't have asked for advice. I am ready to buy the car. I do have a place for the car. I do have the money for the car. The car is not in the seller's way at all and he agreed to hold it for me. I am simply trying to make sure that he can't sale the car, after I pay for it, if he does keep it for me until I get home.
i direct you to my previous comment about abandonment or storage facility. Just hire a towing company to put it in a storage unit for you. shouldnt cost you mroe than 50 a month and there are even some auto yards taht will store for a fee. be carefull though. a friend did that and when we got back from iraq the yard had accidently crushed his car..........

Contact a shipping company and have them door-to-door the car to a friend or family members house and have them store it for you.
That is what I did when I bought mine. Use a bank to transfer him the money and keep a copy of the transaction, send him a bill of sale to sign or have him prepare one, sign it and send it to you along with the title.
I don't think anyone will want to store a car that they sold for someone that they don't know.

If you can't pick the car up or have it picked up, you shouldn't buy it.
If I was a seller I would not sell a car to someone that wouldn't come get it for weeks/months regardless of if they paid for it or not. There are too many things that could happen while I was still in my 'possession'
why this particular car?
how long will you be gone?
if the seller is willing to store the car for you, you might want to think about having some one you know be a point of contact while you are gone, in case the seller needs to move the car(like seller is having to move) or anything should happen (weather damage, theft, ect). also, have a storage agreement drawn up and look to see about getting a full coverage insurance on it. but if you are going to be gone for too long, you might want to have it shipped to a family member who can either store it themselves or take it to a storage facility that has insurance and security.

The Seller has agreed to hold it for me because it isn't in his way and I will be able to pick it up myself in early June. Thanks for all the replies. I didn't expect to get any.

3 months isn't as long as I was thinking, plus it sounds like you have a good seller willing to work with you.
I know of people who have been sent overseas for military or work where they have been gone for longer than that. A guy I worked with was sent to Iraq for 2 years and his parents wound up selling his everyday driver plus a 1972 Chevy PU that he was working on as the vehicles had no place to be stored for a long period and his parents had to keep moving them around after he was gone. Keeping the vehicles around became a burden and with him not going to be able to do anything with them for 2 years it was best to just get rid of them, with his OK.

don't forget to get a bill of sale that has it in writting that he will store the car till june. this will help to make sure that all is clear and there will be no way to get a mechanics/abandonment title.
be safe while away!
