302Feen reminded me of a couple:
The fact that you can actually customize the engine compartment with PARTS not covers, when I go to a car show I look at every car I can. I look at the new Corvettes and really respect the engineering and shape but I hardly glance under the hood as you can't see the engine, there's a big plastic? cover over the entire intake/heads- the only thing they can customize it seems is to get a body colored or chrome, etc. cover for the engine. Many don't even open the hood.
YOU control the car, using the Corvette as an example again, newer cars do too much decision making for me, traction control/ ABS/ etc., it may save a poor driver from making mistakes but limits driver input, road feel, suspension feedback. You need to hone your driving skills more in these old cars and become a better driver because of it I think. Pretty soon you won't be able to turn the traction control off and do a burn out before your 1/4 mi. pass as that control will be taken away from the driver. My wifes Escape has a 90mph limiter on it, that almost kept me from getting out of the way on the interstate once when a 100+ mph driver came up behind me and I had to pass cars to get out the lane...
Here's a quote that sums up old muscle cars for me, it describes driving a '65 Shelby AC Cobra: "There's nothing nice about a Cobra. It's stripped down to the essentials - a big engine, a small car, and four wide tires trying to keep the whole business on the pavement. It's loud, smells like gasoline, and shakes, shudders and bucks. It makes your arms tired and your feet hot. You nearly crash about once every ten minutes. It's so damn wonderful that you can't believe it."

For me it has nothing to do with others.
For me it's THERAPY, way cheaper than a shrink!
Nothing is better than a warm summer evening with the top down.
For me its like I feel that im the car. Just the love of hot rods and classic cars do it for me.
Although the looks and comments made by others doesnt hurt
Hi for me its the fieling, when you just go in and turn the key, and listening to the bigblock come to live. And the old 4 speed who has a special sound, you can start on any gear, becaurse the power is fantastic.
The best is when you meet cars on two lane roads and the person riding shotgun points and you can see them say wow, and then blowing by them and looking in the rearview mirror to see everyone in the car snap their heads around to confirm that they had actually seen a beautiful classic go roaring away!
LoL, we ran outta gas in our '34 once and I think every other person that drove by stopped and asked if I needed help, then they would tell me how pretty the car is!

here's a little bonus: the ease in working/maintaining. my '67 mustang has a wheelbearing that needs replaced and that doesn't require any unpluging of sensors!
and while we are talking about the engine compartment...you can actually see the battery as well. it is not under the washer resivoir, not in the wheel well, not under the MASS air flow, not under the air filter, there are no access posts that have to stick out while the battery is hidden somewhere deep within....(the old vw's have batterries under the rear seats and some cars have them in the trucnk, these are easier to get to then some of these newer model things on the road) sorry, just a little anoyance from my working days...

I dont remember which magazine said it but in reference to an LS6 Chevelle (and this applied to all musclecars IMHO) "Driving the 450 hp Chevelle is like being the guy in charge of triggering atom bomb tests. You have the power, you know you have the power, and you know if you use the power, bad things may happen."

I love to hear the Flowmasters on my 68 Fastback when I'm running it up to 4500 in each gear and watching people stop and point as they smile and watch until we drive completely out of sight.
Gosh I had to actuall think about this one for 2 days!!! Oh yea reading everyone elses resonses also helped.
There are many things that instantly come to mind the main one is the feel of the road, sound and knowing that my ride is EXPERIENCED. not necessarly stoned but just EXPERIENCED. I actually get a high rolling in my stangs, this could be because I only drive them for pleasure.
But I also get a major kick out of driving on the street or in a parkinglot and hearing other cars alarms going off. Its just like when a big mean dog approaches a little dog and the little dog rolls over and pee's on itself YES I AM MENTAL
