Default Correct way to check Automatic Transmission Fluid level?

Hello,
I have a '68 coupe whose transmission slips when it is cold. Once it is warmed up, it runs fine. I remember reading somewhere about the correct way to check an automatic transmission for the correct fluid level - and that it would take 2 people to do it right... Can someone please refresh my memory on this. I'd much rather be able to add 2 dollars of trans fluid to my honey rather than a tranny rebuild...

Thanks,

Joe

check it when it`s hot or warmed up. flat surface. don`t know of any other? if you don`t drive it alot the fluid may need to run a bit to flow into all compartments. thats maybe why until it runs a bit, till it works good?
