Default 1966 Mustang Speedometer

I have begun restoring my gauge cluster, looks really good now. One thing I would like to do is reset the mileage back to zero so when I get this thing back on the road it will be like a brand new start. What is the best way to reset it? Is it a simply procedure? I can see where it looks like to pops out, is that it?

You can't. It's designed to be tamper proof. In most states, it's illegal. I think the only way to do it would be to replace the speedometer with a brand new one.

Hey C6Matt,

I did already think of that and it does work, but slowly. Will it break doing this?

I've heard of people using a piece of speedometer cable and an electric drill. You want to go forward until it rolls over, don't go backward as they aren't designed for this and with some it won't work as they don't want the milage to roll backward.

Some states it is illegal while others it doesn't matter as older cars are odometer exempt. It can be whatever you want on the odo as the state doesn't require any record of it. You'll forever ruin the exact amount of miles the car has on it but that's up to you.

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

dont side-load it and you'll be fine... altyhough I wouldn't use a good drill to do it.. it wil burn up brushes in a hurry...

I currently have no idea of the cars actual mileage so I guess I am not to worried about ever knowing if I turn it back to zero. This is my first resto and literally learning as I go. I just thought it would be cool to start at zero when I back it out of the driveway for the first test drive.

I was able to take it a part, re-set the dials and put back in. Works fine. I didn't realize they pop out that easily.

Thanks for the help.
