Default Im 15 y/o and just got a 1967 mustang and need help.

ok.
heres my 1967 mustang i just got.
i'll be turning 16 in like 6 months...and im going to get a job and fix whatever needs to be fixed on it.

it runs pretty good..it vibrates alot though.
anyone know why?

and it starts..but it doesnt start right up..it takes a few tries.
any thoughts on why that is?

and the doors close..but i have to do it like 10 times...the latches dont want to latch.

anyone know how to replace those?

yeah it needs alot of work i know...but its pretty cool for a first car i think

Hey man welcome to AFM! a few years ago i was in your shoes, 15 y/o with a classic and not knowing what to do with it. It can be over whelming!

That car looks great! The interior and paint look awesome!

The car vibrateing could be caused by many different things: Timing issues, cylinder missing, detonation. Can you give us more details as to when it is vibrating? at an idle, when you rev it up, all the time?

Hard starting could be many things also. any more details? Does it only do it when its cold?

The door latches are quite easy, open the doors unscrew a few bolts and install the new ones.

Welcome to the hobby, no, the life style of restoring a classic mustang!

Sore

thanks! glad to be aboard.

it vibrates...when i first start it up...then i let it idle for about 5 minutes..then the vibration is gone..for the most part.
when it vibrates its like a pattern almost.
like 2 seconds of non vibration...3 seconds of vibration..2 second of non vibration..then 3 secs of vibration..does that even make sense?
the timing is probably of.

and i just went out and started it..it wasnt that hard this time..it was alot colder yesterday..so i guess that has something to do with it.
the carberuetor may need to be replace too tho..
can you put a 2 barrel on that engine?

i dont much about cars..

Hi welcome new car nut...you're hooked now, great car for a first car.
First I would get a manual for your car, parts stores should have them, either Haynes or Chiltons, this will give you general explanations on how things come apart/go together, how they work, fluid amounts (oil changes, antifreeze, etc.), torque amounts for bolts, etc. Get familiar with your car and keep maintenance records in the last couple of pages - when you changed the oil, filters, brakes, etc.
There's no way to tell the last time any maintenance was done and the parts look old on the engine, I'd start with a thorough tune up.
Distributor cap, rotor, plugs (be sure to mark the wires -which cylinder they go to front to back before pulling them), take a look at the wires for cracking they may be ok, fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve (top rear of valve cover), can of carb cleaner - yours looks pretty gummy from the pics.
All of this will be explained in the manual, and should be <$50 for all the parts. A tune up will get you more familiar with your engine.
Good luck, do all this with the motor cold.
Jon

the vibration sounds like there is a cylinder missing untill it gets warmed up. again it could be a number of things.

Yes you can get a 2 barrel carb for it but you will need to get a new intake manifold.

Find you a good older mechanic and become friends with them.On the door its probably needs new or rebuild the hinges the miss probably needs a full tune up.

I feel you on this, i'm 15 and have '68 coupe witha 5.0L, I agree with Jonk67 and Sore Pancake, but I would hold on the carb change, get the engine in good shape, look over your car, make sure it is sound, then look for upgrades, you may want to enjoy cruisin' before you start to mod it!

Default need some help

yea im the same way... i have a 1966 mustang 200ci. And right now all thats done to the car is a new paint job and a holly 1 barrel carb. I am 15 years old too and i got the car basically all original, for now i am going to fool around with the 6 cylinder and when im 18 im going to put a 302 or 351 into it. It has original hubcap spinners and the orignal spare tire. All orignal interior and no headliner yet. I need some ideas how i can hop up the 6 cylinder a little maybe a 2 barrel carb? i have the 40 series flowmaster in the garage sized down for the small input of the exhuast than it has a 2 inch duel output. anyone help with ideas?

thanks

Here's one forum to get you started,
Ford Six Performance: The Web's Leading Resource for Ford Inline Six-Cylinder Engines and Cars!
I don't have a six but have seen this topic come up often, you should search the talk and tech forums for 6 cyl or 6 performance also search the net. You can build a pretty respectable 6 performance wise and still get great gas mpg for a classic.

i was 17 when i bought my 66, i just turned 18. fordsix.com is a good forum, lots of information. classicinlines.com carries all the parts for the 6, but theres no forum there (there both operated by the same guy and classicinlines used to be fordsix performance products). a 350cfm 2barrel would be good, but you cant buy a new intake manifold for it because its cast to the head. you can buy an adapter from clifford, stovebolt or classicinlines.com; or you can modify your intake for it. i think most people are using a weber 32/36, holley 2300 or 5200.
