Default Axels Ford Mustang 1966 Mustang HardTop 302 restoration

Hello everyone,

First some info on me:
My name is Axel, I'm 18 years old and I live in Sweden. I've allways been interessted in cars and specially the american ones. I stared looking for american cars 6 years ago and the first years I was mainly into camaros and firebirds (70-73). 2003 I bought a Camaro 1975 with a 350 engine that I had for almost a year, I came to the conclution that I couldn't really live with the look of the front end so I sold it. After that began a long period of searching for the right car, in september last year I finally found my mustang.

And now the interessting part:
Car history:
The car is an early 1966 delivered with a std 289 and a c4 trans. Colors are Silver Frost Metallic with a black hardtop and black interior. The car was delivered with an AC. My mustang was imported from california USA in the spring of 2007. It has had one lady owner since 1986 and hadn't been driven much in the last 15 years. The car is totally rust-free and has its original paint still on which is pretty unusual here in Sweden.

Project:
I started restoring the car in the beginning of the winter. As you can see on the pictures below I started by stripping the car down and handing it into a local painter (it should be back in 2 weeks)

After that I've been looking at the engine and that is where I am atm.

Pictures:

Just after having bought the car:

Some random pics from my november holiday:
I had planned to use the holiday in the garage for stripping the mustang down, instead my hobbie (rally driving) costed me a holiday in bed (my friend hit an oak in a pretty good speed, we bouth made it without major damages)

Still in life:

And that is my project is atm!

Future:
I got alot of things left to do. The engine will cost me a small fortune to rebuild and I'm now looking for a new/rebuilt crate or an other one (advices and links to good adds are very appritiated). The car also needs to be assembeled when it gets home from the painter and I'm still waiting for a lot of parts from the states (mustang unlimited).

I'll make sure to update this thread ofthen so you can follow my work. I understand that you have tons of these project in the USA (lucky u) but hopefully some of u will still find joy in my thread.

Feedback and advices +ideas etc. are ofcourse very appritiated!!

That was all for this time

Wow the picture of your stang in that barn is freaking beautiful. I have a silver frost pony too (about to be repainted same colours if the guy ever calls me back) and I'm really glad one of them made it over to you. With petrol prices being so high right now especially in europe thats a huge investement haha. Keep us updated. Are you going with factory original colors?

The picture is really nice, the style of the car really fits into the "old-barn-looking" environment. The colors are going to be factory original and I hope that it'll soon be repainted so that I can start reassembling it.

What engine do you have in yours?

how much is a complete paintjob in the USA for an already stripped-down car?

A small update from Sweden

Now things are starting to happen again, first of all I've found 4 wheels in a bad condition that I could buy cheap. I have plans to paint them in black (like the vinyl top) and put chrome spinners on them, I believe that'll be nice!
http://i25.tinypic.com/f046bl.jpg

I also visited the painter today and I got a possitive suprise, he has started!! Hopefully I'll be able to rush him a little and the car'll be ready in a couple of weeks from now. Here is some picktures that I took today, enjoy

Finally a new update, it has been very long since my last one but I havn't found enough time for the car, and even less for the forums.

I have been working a lot on the engine because the old one was in a really bad condition. I found a newly rebuilt 289 shortblock from 1966 and a new 600 cfm edelbrock carb from one guy, then I found some parts elsewere and it has been going on like that untill now when my engine is finally complete (i hope).
The setup look like this atm:
engine:
¤ Freshly honed 289 block (1966)
¤ Newly balanced and refurbished crank
¤ All bearings and piston-rings are new (original pistons, 1966)
¤ Rebuilt heads (289, 65 4v, 10:1 compression), max-ported with 1.94/1.6 stainless valves
¤ Double harder valve-springs (made for high lifts)
¤ Comp Camshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adT...lass_10x10.gif Ultra-Gold roller rockers (1.6 ratio, 3/8 stud)
¤ Comp Cams hardened pushrods
¤ Highlift camshaft with 284" duration
¤ New timing chain
¤ Matchported edelbrock torker intake
¤ edelbrock 600 cfm carb (manual choke)
¤ Pertronix Ignitor I

http://i34.tinypic.com/est4x2.jpg

Rest:
¤ 2500 rpm stall converter from Transmission Specialties
¤ Original 1966 c4
¤ 8" all original with 3.00:1

Last week I finally collected the car from the painter and the result is magnificent!
Here you can see a proud owner with his newpainted car:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2usid61.jpg

We (me and my friend Lukas) put the car in a warm garage and we started changing the vinyl top. First we took the old top of (a warm-air gun? helps alot). The we took away all the old glue uning a metallbrush on a electric screwdriver and some thinner.
http://i39.tinypic.com/kci82s.jpg

After recieving this clean surface we could paint it in a 2 component primer followed by a black 2 component topcoat (both rolled on). After the black paint had dryed we went over it woth some sandpaper (120) just to make the surface rough for the new glue.
http://i43.tinypic.com/33a894j.jpg
http://i39.tinypic.com/23kugr4.jpg

After this we started putting the new roof onto the car and it really was a hard job, but after a couple of tries and 1 day the roof was finally on. A few tips that are worth alot when putting the roof on is: have a warm-air gun ready (it makes the vinyl easier to handle), whait a couple of minutes before you put the top onto the glued roof (sprayglue that is), have a sharp razorblade and a good pare of scissors ready and be cool, take your time!
http://i43.tinypic.com/20gh21j.jpg

After having done the roof we rolled the car into a bigger garage for the assembly starting with the driprail mounting which by the way wasn't at all so hard a people say. A bit of vaseline and they will snap right on!

Here I'm baking by exause manifold bolts, my mom didn't really like the new smell in the kitchen
http://i43.tinypic.com/wrdh0o.jpg

I then put the manifolds and the mounting onto the engine:
http://i40.tinypic.com/2v92qfn.jpg

The engine is getting tied up onto the lift

This little thing made me almost go crazy before I reallized that it shouldn't be there when going auto trans

Engine together with the trans, don't they make a great couple

That was all for this time,
Hope you all have started ónto a great 2009!
Best Regards Axel, Sweden
