Default Mexican 1973 Mustang

I know this has come up a few times where people were looking to see what the Mexican built cars were like. Here's a link to a current Ebay auction of a Mexican built 73 Mustang. eBay Motors: Ford : Mustang (item 160223917013 end time Apr-04-08 16:53:10 PDT)

Not my car for sale, 'nor do I know the seller! I just want to point it out if anyone is curious as these cars don't show up very often.

Some points to notice:

Speedometer/odometer in kilometers
Spanish door tag
Spanish decal on air cleaner
Spanish fan shroud
VIN number codes different than American built cars.
Round snorkel on air cleaner base

Note: the driver's door isn't original to the car. That's why it has a sticker with a DSO of 17 under the original stamped metal tag that the original door had and someone removed and transferred to the replacement door.

Just thought I'd share.

Why wouldn't they just ship fastbacks in the first place? What's a Boss Maverick?

Mexico only made coupes and they didn't like us back then so they wouldn't import anything thats why the De Mexico Shelby mustangs where coupes.Boss Maverick is what it sounds like a Boss 302 in a Maverick.

I forgot about the fastback thing but I went searching. That car doesn't appear to have been converted, and it wouldn't make sense either as after it was converted it would become a fastback at that point in Mexico. Something didn't add up.

I found out that Mexico did allow fastbacks for one year only, 1973. Look towards the bottom of this page LEADING THE WAY WITH CLASSIC MUSTANGS

And here's the Mexican Mustang registry (how I found the car in the above link) South of the Border Mustang Registry

Neat site, I've never run across it before.

I did find a few errors on it though. In 1968 they claim Raven Black was only available on Shelbys, not true. They also miss the fact that Lime Gold was available on Shelbys, surprising since it was one of the more popular colors!

This car probably rusted as it did because of the lack of paved roads? My '66 was owned by a gentleman that had to drive some 10 miles of gravel to get to his house. When i got the car, it has similar rust, under chrome trim (as on the hood of the Mexican), and the underside was shot.

Ironically, despite all the rust, the car still had (and still has to this day) the original convertible top. It kinda looks like hell, though!

Thanks for sharing the links, everyone. I learned something new today.

Michael

66rusty,

I hate seeing rusted Mustangs! My Chevy friends always ask me how my "Rustang" is doing. (It only has just a dime sized rust spot on each forward lower part of the doors.)

That auction said the Mexican made Fastback is located in Knoxville, Maryland, so I guess it's been here in the U.S. for a while.
