sold my 65 rag 7 years ago and ive missed it ever since...not a day has gone by without a thought of replacing it. finally today, went out to see a "beautiful" but rusted 65 convertible. 6 cylinder, holes in the lower rear quarters, rust everywhere you can see metal. trunk is a mess, doors are rusted and the interior smells like my week old towel...mold on the seats. if possible, everything needs to either be refurbished or replaced. manual top wont fold down all the way and it hasnt seen the road in alteast a year uncovered to the elements...rain and mositure galore. she starts atleast, idle is rough and the seller recommends i "tow" it home.
whats a good offer? keeping in mind that if i even want to attempt restoring it and getting my investment back. its an early mustang, im not rich enough to get a better condition one to replace the one i sold without slowly investing in fixing another one up. i miss my old one bad and this one is a beauty...thats if i use my imagination and projection of it restored.
anyone here have any stories of bringing one back to life that nobody else would dare touch?
Hello.: This car will cost you a lot more than a car that's already basically finished. If it was me, I would keep looking. The car you are describing is not an investment, it's a money pit. You will absolutely, 100% for sure lose lots of money on that car. Hope that helps.
I got one like it for $100. 1966 289 car is folded at the cowl area. The nose pointing up at about 10 degrees.Electric top. About $1500 will do the floor with me doing the labor. Just found the trim for the windshield and back seat cushions. It's what the guys out west call a ECI car. "East Coast Idiot". I love the part of straightening everything out and doing a ground up refurb.

Hi again. Yours was worth a hundred bucks because it was originally a 289 car. Being a 6cyl car, with everything else being equal, subtract about 5 grand from that figure and that would be a fair offer.
Interesting as I know where another is and it's a 66 6-banger. The guy wants more for it but it's in alot better condition. Still needs frame rails etc.

went to see it again today...the guy was willing to take $500.
took a better look at the rust. she needs new rails, floorpans. the rear trough(i think thats what its called, anyway, the section where the rear part of the softop screws to the body in the trunk) has disintegrated away. the wheel wells, esp in the rear are eaten thru...BUT, the frame shows great integrity and no signs of past coverups from any accidents. so basically, the shell of the car needs MAJOR help with new metal, but the frame is solid. what to do....
btw, if i want to replace the doors, i remember in my past research that i could only use doors from a donor convertible...no coupe/fb. can any experts confirm this?
Hi again. The doors are the same. It's the door window glass that's different. You need to use the convertible door window. And yes, good welders are generally quite proud of their accomplishments. But, in all fainess, they have every reason to be. It is not a simple craft to get good at.
Don't do it!!! The car will make bacon out of your piggy bank. I got my 67 coupe Stang for 3,500, running and in good condition. A friend of mine bought a piece of crap like you described and you could poke your finger through the floor, right through the crumbling metal floorpan. The doors were the same, rusted and falling apart. The trunk rusted all the way around. He ended up doing major surgery to the car. He found another car and mixed and matched parts from all over the place. After $7,000 dollars he still needed a better engine and lots of other parts. So walk away and don't look back!!! HEAR me now and you'll BELIEVE me later.

Have to agree, take your time, save some money, take out a loan if you need to.... Get one that is in decent condition, straight with minimal rust and go from there.
