Default 1967 Mustang a deal?? (Update from the 66 post)

My wife went an looked at the Mustang, VIN 7F01C116228 (apparently a 67) no She said its got some rust on the A-pillars (small holes), It had a vinyl top thats gone and the roof is rusted a bit. The driver side floor pan is rusted out, over all the car is in decent shape, ran a year ago and has been sitting since. Its originally a maroon color (maroon interior too) anyone know about this? I can get the car for $1000, I just need some information or advice on weather or not this will be good buy?

A complete 289 car (C code) for $1000 is a buy. In parts alone it is worth more than that.

The thing that concerns me is the rust in the roof and pillars. That isn't as easy (and cheap) to fix as a door skin, trunk drop off, or quarter panel patch or other common repairs for these cars. If it's real bad a complete roof transplant from another car is the best fix and may be the only. If the rust is limited to a few spots and doesn't extend much into the roof skin them patches may be possible.

I would investigate the rust and roof more closely and decide if you're willing to fix it or pay for someone else to. Floor pans are a relatively easy fix.

Edit: From your VIN I can give you this additional info about the car. It was scheduled to be built between Nov 3rd and 5th of 1966. The date code on the door tag should be 03L, 04L, or 05L.

I would check to see how bad the rust is, see if it's just surface level or just what. I've had to do small metal replacements on the top skin on mine and they turned out really nice. The biggest challenge was MIG welding the patches in slowly so it would not warp the roof.

A title is only important if your state requires it to register a vehicle of that age. CT is a non title state for 1980 and older vehicles, I have no title for my 68 Mustang. If I sell my car the new owner will get a bill of sale only as I can't title it here. Yes, I can get a title from a title place but it won't do the next owner any good as I can't renew the title in my name in the state of CT, they will confiscate it.

That car is a 67 and make sure that if you buy it you write it up as a 67 on the bill of sale. There are places that you can get titles from (Broadway Title is the most popular) if you need one. Title states are aware that not all states issue titles for older cars anymore so there shouldn't be any problems if you take the car to a state requiring a title as they can issue one as long as you have some proof of ownership of the vehicle.

Looking at those pics closely I can see the rust extending up into the roof skin. The structure underneath the skin may be rusted too. It's fixable, but will most likely require a roof from a donor car. It may be able to be patched but I see the need for many, many patches. I see the holes all above the driprail area and above the windshield. To pay someone to fix this will be a few grand.

I should add this,

That car is saveable.........but if you're looking to repair it and sell it in the future you won't get your money back with the amount of work it needs. Being a coupe with the most common small block V8 the value isn't there and never will be. Granted it's not a 6cyl, but not being a fastback and/or the big block 390 it's end value is limited.

If you're looking for a project car and not concerned about end value then this may be an OK car for you. The red/red combo would be sharp when the car is finished but it will require alot of work. You may be better off getting this car as a parts car (it is an excellent donor car being intact and complete) and finding a more rust free shell to swap the parts over too.

What would you consider it worth? Would it be worth buying for a grand and straight turn around and sell for ?? amount. Or what would it be worth fixed up? How about if i did an engine swap to like a 351w or something? I'm really trying to decide if its worth a $1000 and what would be the best course of action, (i dont know a lot and dont want to lose money on the deal) Thanks
