Default Classic mustang transmission terminology

Guys, i am kind of new to this game and i get lost and thrown off with the tranny nomenclature (ie T4, c6, etc etc), do we have like a transmission terminology for dummies? or can someone dimistify it for me?

bottom line, i have a 1971 302 2bbl auto grande, which i would like to change the tranny for something better than the original stock, in your expert opinion what would be the best bang for the buck?

Thanks in Advance and best regards

Hello. These cars would have come with one of seven different transmissions. The automatic would be either a C4 or a C6. There is nothing better, when it comes to reliability or the ability to hold horsepower. The 4 speed manual transmissions would have been either the Ford top-loader or a cast iron cased T-10 on the early 65s, or an aluminium cased T-10 if you had a 65 Shelby GT-350. The top loader is the best transmission ever built anywhere on the planet by anyone. They are pretty much bullet proof. The T-10s were particularly fragile and basically junk. Shelby used them in the 65 GT-350s because they were significantly lighter than the top loader. The three speed manual was a good transmission for driving around town with. There was also a Dagenham built 4 speed manual used on the 6 cyl cars, but was mostly for export model cars and was so amazingly flimsy that most of them have been blown up long ago, so you probably won't be encountering one of them.Hope that helps.

you cant beat a c4 tranny. they can handle high horsepower, and last forever. there are several companies for shift kits, and stalls as well. if you are wanting a manual tranny, i cant help you

Hi again. I did indeed forget the FMX, also known as 'The Slush Box'.. That one never seems to come to my mind. I guess it's because it wasn't available on the earlier cars. But then, even if it was, it isn't really something that I would want to have in my car.

Dude, relax.most likely ,behind that 302, you're runing a C4 Auto, an excellent tranny that can be built up to take LOTS of abuse. Most of the c6's were behind the 351Ws........although,they were also behind the 351C...........and a LOT of the Big Blocks, such as 390s,428's etc

i'm building a 390 that WILL have a FMX, a VERY reliable transmission that appeared in early 67 on the galaxies.............and then were found in the '69& up Mustangs, both big& small blocks.Just they were kinda heavy, cast iron tail& bell areas, with an alum, center.
