Default 1965 Mustang rear end question

i have a 1965 mustang. it has a 3 speed with 302 engine. I just fix the a frame and my buddy took off and hit it hard and the drive shaft made aboom and drop out. i replace the u joints front and back. now when you drive it has a thumping noise so you cant go. like something is not in place. he keep saying its the drive shaft not right. please help if you have had that problem before. did he tear something else up. are we dont have it line up right. he claims its not the rear end. thanks

My first thought is to check the tranny mounts to see if they let go when the u-joint broke. If the rear joint broke, and the shaft danced around for a revolution or two, that can cause some trouble. Is the tranny leaking any fluid?

When the drive shaft came out did it just slide out or snapped a u joint? If it just slid out then its too short. It could be a bad tranny mount or even try unbolting the drive shaft turn it 180 degrees then put it back.

You can raise the rear of the car on jackstands so the wheels are free to turn. Put the tranny in neutral and spin the wheels by hand and listen and watch what's going on. You will need 2 people for this if the axle is nonlocking so you both can turn the wheels in the same direction to get the driveshaft to turn. Without having th engine running you should be able to isolate the noise easier and might even feel it through the wheels.
