Default 1965 Mustang Coupe Window Leak, Please Help!

Alright, so the sealant around my windshield and rear window is not in the best condition ever, allowing water to seep through in some places and leak in. The windshield leaks on the bottom corner on the passenger side and the rear window leaks along the bottom and into the trunk by each wheel well.

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem before and what an estimated cost would be to have both windows resealed...

also do I need any clips for the door moldings? or any weatherstripping? or do the pieces just snap onto the lip groove thing above the doors?

hopefully that will be the most of my problems, still need to find two corner molding pieces for the rear window, its a 6 set but I only have 4 pieces so far...

thanks

~Brendan

The door weatherstripping has one screw located at the bottom of the windshield pillar. The remainder gets glued into place. You must clean the rubber to remove the remains of the mold release substance used in manufacture. Don't use lacquer thinner, it'll ruin the rubber. Get a spray can of "3M Release Agent". This will remove the coating on the rubber and remove the old glue from the car. Follow up with some paint prep on the surfaces that will be exposed to the glue. You want all traces of silicone and wax to be removed. This area must be clean or the glue won't adhere.

As for the leaking glass. It will be a never ending battle trying to stop the leaks. I contacted a local auto glass shop that has been in business forever. They do the vintage glass. They said that they would do the removal and install, all that they wanted was for me to provide the weatherstrip. After doing this job once in the past, I really suggest that you let a shop do this. If you break the glass, you've got real problems.

You may need to remove the glass yourself by cutting the old W/S with a box cutter or other sharp tool and then gently removing the glass. The metal lip area most likely has rust problems.

If you need to replace the headliner, the front glass needs to be out so that the headliner material can be glued into place. The H/L material sits under the weatherstripping and the results of its installation is much better this way. (the factory way)

If you need to pull the glass for repair, you'll either have to have the car towed to a shop for installation or if you're lucky, there may be a mobile glass installer that'll do the job on site.

I think that about $200 bucks should cover the install with you providing the W/S. This is for front and back. It's just a guesstimate, someone may have a better idea of the cost.

Yea I decided to just call a shop nearby, one of my dad's buddy's is really into stang's he has like 3 or 4. So he suggested this guy, and for $315 I'm having the windshield replaced, then resealed and the rear window resealed and he's going to put the weather stripping and molding on for me as well. It was gonna cost about $130 to have the window's resealed but he told me 8/10 times the windshields crack and break and need to be replaced, that any my windshield is scratched up a bit and hazy so I figured why not, he did say that the rear window usually never breaks so that should be fine.

Now the only problem I'm having is with the rear molding, I have called several places and they will only sell the 6pc kit, all I need are the two top corner pieces lol...

anyways, thanks for the tips, but I'm gonna agree on having a pro do it...

I would also check to see if you have a cowl leak.. take a hose and run water in the cowl vent outside and look inside..

Default If you are pulling the glass out...

Now is the time to replace the headliner if it needs it............

checked it, def not the cowl. I spent a good hour going over the windshield, roof, and around the corner fenders, I'd have my bro go over it with the hose and I'd sit in the passenger side, and the only time it starts leaking is when the water runs down the windshield and down the bottom corner area.

The rear window on the other hand is the both bottom corners it leaks from and over the wheel well, so its not getting all in the trunk its just leaking and sliding down the wheel well and into those two dips on the far sides of the trunk.

Idk, the guy doing the work seems like he knows what he's doing considering the fact that most of his work is on classic stangs, so it's not like I'm going to some Brand Name no-nothing place or anything like that.

thanks for all the responses
