Any Suggestions? 1968 mustang fastback dash vin doesn't match

I have a 1968 fastback with a 302 motor. Up until recently was under the assumption that the car originally came with a 6 cyl and was converted some time ago. The reason I felt that way was simply because the registration said 6cyl. Recently a guy pointed out under the hood, on both sides, was the real vin number stamped. Those numbers say the car originally came with a v8 and the date code on the engine confirms that. Even the door tag and the tag under the hood matched the stamped numbers. The only number that doesn't match all the others is the dash tag. Evidently some time ago someone changed out the dash and never switched the tags out. Years ago, who knew these cars would be worth what they are today. Someone probably was thinking cheaper registration, cheaper insurance, never thinking this would be a DMV nightmare to switch back, especially in NY. DMV says that the car is to be registered to the dash tag. I had a policeman that i know run the correct vin and it comes back not on file. That isnt enough for the DMV. I contacted the NY DMV and if I followed through, they would take the car for investigation, to make sure nothing was stolen and could possibly end up with generic vin, something lik mv99999. They scared me so much that I wasnt going to take that chance. By just changing the dash tag somehow doesnt solve my registration problem. Any ideas?

Hello. If it was me, I would lose that vin tag and buy the car from someone in a non-title state, get a bill of sale from the person in the non-title state and proceed as if it was a different car. Transfer it to a New York title, pay all of the appropriate taxes, etc.... and go from there with it. It's not like you're trying to commit fraud here, if the vin stampings, door tag and buck tag all say the same thing. Hope that helps.

I've actually considered that. Maybe "buying" a car with no paperwork, only stampings and tags. Take that proof to the DMV and registering it that way. I would have to, in theory, "lose" the car that is registered as a 6cyl. I would actually show ownership of 2 very similiar mustangs. The way vin number games are played today I didn't know if that would raise flags all over the place being that everything is the same except the 6 cyl verses 8 cyl, and the production number of course.

i've got the case of the registration and door tag being the same, but the fender aprons being different. I have no dash tag. The car was registered and titled under the wrong vin on the door tag. Now I'm going to have to go to dmv and have it inspected. they said they'd decide on what vin to use.

guess I'm not worried about it...as long as I can keep the car, they can assign me abc123.
