Default Should I add a luggage rack?

Personal opinions welcome here.
I have a 1966 Sprint 200 coupe. For some time now I've been kicking around the idea of adding a luggage rack to the trunk....I just can't make up my mind. My baby-girl did not originally come with one and my big, bad muscle-car loving Dad would probably have strangled me; but I kind of like the look of them. So. My request to all of you out there is....tell me what you think - pros/cons?

I wouldn't put one on only because it was not original to your car. I have seen cars with them, and they do look nice!

Not real big on the look myself; I like simple.

Hello. The problems with the luggage rack are that you have to drill four holes in the trunk lid to attach it, and if it is mounted just a little bit off, it really looks goofy. It doesn't take more than like an 1/8 of an inch to make it really stand out as being off-center, or if it's dead center, but rotated around a little bit off from square. It will probably be very annoying. The luggage rack also makes it a lot more difficult to wash and wax the trunk lid. Hope that helps.

I had one on a 75 Corvette I owned a few years ago. It looked good, and I'm sure it'd look great on your Mustang. The only thing I have to offer is: If it's a chrome rack, with chrome attaching parts, think hard before you decide. They have a tendency to rust (I'm being generous here, mine started rusting the instant it was out of the packaging, lol). If it's a stainless steel rack, you have a better chance of it looking good for a while. Even stainless steel comes in different qualities, the lower quality stainless steel WILL rust, it'll just take a little longer than chrome.so be careful!

Personally I would never drill a hole in my Mustang that did not absolutely have to be there. That just invites rust and leaks. Also like Veronica said, it will make washing and waxing difficult. You can buy one and retrofit it for 3-M tape maybe or make it magnetic and no one would know but you and try it out for a while befor eyou commit.

Personal opinion only but I rather do like them on convertibles. Not a fan of them on coupes.
Others have made many good points for you to consider.

What the rack available with the fastbacks? Not too sure off the look though.

Now I really like the magnet idea - might be worth a try, especially since overall opinion seems to be: "survey says....NO".

Thanks for all the replies and especially for the reasoning behind them. Most are thoughts I had already had in considering it, but I think I'll go with majority at this point and keep the trunk lid 'clean'.

Not available on fastbacks, the trunk lid is too small

They are/were available on fastbacks - it was a different rack, but they look terrible (IMO)

I know a guy locally who bought one new and still has the rack on it, he doesn't really like it that much now, but since it is original he doesn't want to change it.

+1

I think they look OK on convertibles, but not a fan of them on coupes.
I have a rack that came on my '67 convertible, but I am thinking about getting rid of it - like Veronica said, it is hard to keep the chrome polished, it is prone to rust and the paint wants to bubble because of water, debris, etc. that gets in around the mounts.
You can't really use the rack either because you dont want to scratch it or cause damage to the trunk lid.

When I paint my car, I think I am going to get rid of the luggage rack.
