There's the simple fact that the 68 had the least produced over the other model years, only 317,404. The 65s had the biggest production run which covered some 16 months or so and sold 680,989. That's more than half of the 68 production. 66 production was over 600k too.
Ford got hurt bad during the 68 model year due to a strike that shut the plants down for 2 months and completely halted production during that time. Mustang sales were slipping too as it had competition for a year now from the Camaro and Firebird and some of the Chrysler and AMC products.
