Default Need advice for '70 restoration

Hey all, looking for some advice from you pony experts. I going to buy a 70 sportsroof (mach 1 or boss 302 if I can find one) that I want to restore. Im not experienced with engine work and thats where I need some help. Obviously if I find a car with matching #'s engine I would rebuild, but finding a matching #'s car isn't a must have for me.

My question is this...Say I find a car with a 351 4V Windsor, but isn't original to the car, would it be better for me to keep it and rebuild it or find a car with out an engine and purchase a 351 remanufactured engine? Cost is pretty much my deciding factor, as I know I can get a remanufactured 351 or 302 anywhere from $3000-$4500. How much would it cost to have an engine rebuilt? This car will be a weekend/show car, mostly for my own pleasure and I'm not gung ho on having everything original. So can anyone share their knowledge? Thanks.

Welcome to the site!!!!You are looking to buy a expensive car,so shop wisely. As far as an engine goes,i suggest to buy a reman. with a good warranty.

My personal opinion, a 351 Mach 1 that does not have a number matching engine is no big deal. Now a B2, B9 or CJ car, would be a different story.

If the block is good, and since you do not have much experience, just take it somewhere and have it rebuilt.

Yeah I don't plan on rebuilding an engine myself. Do you know a ballpark figure to how much it might cost to have one rebuilt and about how long it normally takes to have an engine rebuilt?

As for remanufactured engines, I've found some nice engines from Carolina Machine Engines where you can get a decent 5 year warranty for relatively cheap. Can you get any kind of warranty on rebuilt engines?

Im currently in Iraq so it's hard to shop around for this kind of information, I appreciate the help.
