Default asking for ideas. 1964 wants new engine

hello i am a new member to this forum. i have a 1964 1/2 mustang. i got bored with the 260 it came with and scraped that awhile back. i got out of the marine corp and now have time to put a new engine in. i'm thinking for going with a 351 w but know they are hard to find and pricey. i want to keep a small block. anyone with ideas please help.

I have a 351w in my 66 but plan on switching to a 302 because the 351 is tight plus I have a hard time changing the plugs and if you want headers it is a tight fit unless you get blockhuggers but a 302 with the right build and 62cc heads you could give you around 380hp maybe more

351W are not that hard to find. It will be a tight fit, but it has been done many times.

You did not indicate what use your Mustang will see. If it's to be driven often on the street with an occasional run at the track, I would not go with a 347. The 347 makes great power but is better suited for track duty. They are notorious for having problems with the bottom ring due to the short piston required from the stroke. A better stroker for the 302 is the 331. The rod angles are not nearly as extreme and it runs very well on the street and the track.

If you stay with a 351, you can get around the tight fit. You can also stroke this engine to big block proportions and really make some serious power on just the motor. I would suggest you go with the 408 stroker if you choose to beef up the 351.

Welcome and good luck!

Google crate engines and look at all the options that are out there for good performing 302 based engines. Often times a good crate engine is no more expensive than a total performance rebuild.

Most crate engines come with some type of warrantee.

I have a 302 in mine and it works well. I'm not sure there is that much diference in the 289. That would give you a lot mof options. I know there are a lot of motors on ebay in that catagory. Good Luck

Like some have already said, it depends on how you intend on using your car. I'm mostly into crusing so for me a warned over 289/302 would be great. I'm motoring around in an I6, 66 Mustang so that great for me
