Hello, and welcome to the site. Ford did not offer a Boss 429 for 1971. The Boss 429 was only available in 1969 and 1970. For 1971, Ford offered a Boss 351. The 429 (non-Boss engine) was available in the 1971 model year, but only for a few months. You could get the 429 in any body style, but no Boss 429. Below are the engines offered for the 71 model year:

250cid 1V 6-cyl 145 hp L Code
302cid 2V V-8 210 hp F Code
351cid2 V V-8 240 hp H Code
351cid 4V V-8 280 hp Cobra Jet Q Code
351cid 4V V-8 285 hp M Code
351cid 4V V-8 330 hp Boss R Code
429cid 4V V-8 370 hp Cobra Jet C Code
429cid 4V V-8 375 hp Cobra Jet J Code

The Boss 429 engine has very distinctive valve covers and you'll know one when you see it. Here's a link to a pic of the Boss 429.

Doesn't take much to be able to identify a B9, just look at the huge heads and the plugs going right through the middle of those huge heads.
