Default Your best "found in a barn" stories.

What awesome Mustang finds have you stumbled across?

My two best:

It's 1987 in Moscow, Id and I agree to help a friend do a manifold change on his 1958 Chevy pickup. He has a garage he rents in town and I meet him there to do the swap.

In the rather large old wooden shop, over in the corner, is a mustang shape under an old cloth cover.

I investigate and discover a 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible in excellent condition!

It's black, 4spd, and all original.

The interior is out of it and everything is dusty; looks like it's been there for a couple of years.

I track down the owner and ask him if he's interested in selling it.

Yep. He wants $15k. In 1987, being 17 yrs old and making $4.25 an hour, he might as well have wanted a million for it...

That would have been a good deal as I'm sure that car is worth at least 10 times that today.

2nd story was just last year.

Friends of mine in Iowa live out in the country and had a boat for sale that I was interested in. I went out to look at it and in a large machine shed, saw another Mustang shape under a car cover.

I asked the guy about it and he took the cover off to reveal the most perfectly preserved Mustang I've ever seen.

It was a 1965 coupe w/ the 6 cyl and 3 spd w/ AC. Bright red with the white interior and about 10k miles on it.

The car was absolutely perfect! It looked like it had just come off the Ford dealer showroom floor!

It was the wife's uncle's car who had bought it brand new in 1965 and kept it in an underground storage unit that controlled the temp and humidity.

The uncle never drove it in the rain or on gravel. The only non original parts were the battery and the tires.

The wife said that she didn't want it because she wanted a blue convertible and an automatic. They asked me if I wanted it and how much it was worth.

Being an honest man, I told them I couldn't afford it and that they had the nicest original Mustang I've ever seen...

I told them to find a knowledgeable appraiser to have it valued and to be careful and have a 2nd opinion before accepting any offers.

How about you guys; any rare Mustang finds??

I've stumbled across 2. The first such find occurred when I and a friend were at his friend's place (I know, follow the bouncing ball, sorry). We were there to see a '67 Chevelle his friend just bought. WHile waiting for it to be rolled out of the trailer, I noticed a '65 Mustang coupe off to the side in the grass. I looked at it, asked about it, and the owner (my friend's friend) shot me a selling price fo $3500, including him trailering the car to my house. It's a "c" code, 3 speed, and has factory A/C. When I got the car and looked in the trunk, I found a cache of new parts for it to boot. I still have it and am currently working on it.

The second one was discovered through the machine shop that did the work on my Cobra Jet rebuild for my 69 Mach 1. The machinist told me about a 68 big block coupe for sale for "a couple thousand". I called and found out it was an X-code. The bigger surprise is that it turned out to be the first car I had ever owned. My father helped me purchase it when I was a junior in high school and I sold it 25 years ago. It cost me $4000 to get it, it needs a full restoration, but the memories and being able to get my first car back is "priceless" as the saying goes.

My Dad and I stumbled across 2 Boss 351's in 1991 in an old warehouse. We bought them for $5000.00 each. They both run great, have the original engine block and all the hard to find Boss parts, but need some work (Medium Blue Metallic and Grabber Lime).

I bought my '67 fastback out of a garage that was about to fall down in 1989. It was a Texas car with little rust. It now sports a 351c 4v and a T5 trans with a 3.70 traction lok. I only paid $800 for it.

Here's a hidden treasure story- my very good friend recently bought a 65 fastback. The car was discovered way out in the country, literally sitting inside a chicken coop. The owner had spray painted the whole entire car grey to hide its identity. Why? Because it is a Shelby. The owner was so paranoid someone would steal it, that he painted it grey. My friend bought it for $30,000, I saw it last week, it is a true Shelby, with all the tell-tale signs of a Shelby. It's not my story, but what a great find for him. The car is in the process of a total restoration.

Default The 66...

My 17 year old son has always loved mustangs and we have been to a few Good Guy car shows and some car lots. I could not imagine paying that much for an old car!!!
I made a deal with him that if he could find one that we could clean up get running I would take a look at it IF the price was right.
He was excited I caved in and I was going to help with the Mustang Project. I did not expect him to find one.
Later that same week he was over at a buddies house and told him of our deal and his friends Dad said his construction company was clearing a field of old vehicles and containers. Inside one container was a 66 A code coupe that had 1978 tags on it. It had not been in the rain but someone had used it as a parts car for small items like the carb, grill, radiator and instrument gauge. The good news was it was totally rust free and they only wanted $300. The bad news was it was in need of a total restoration. We had a delivered on a flat bed. The motor was bad and so was the old 3 speed.
From looking at misc. papers in the car, it appears the transmission blew up and the guy had it towed to the lot and he pushed it into the container to work on it later. For whatever reason, that never happened. 30 Years latter it came out of the container to new owners.
I decided it would be a great opportunity for us to bond at a time I feel him pulling away. It has been a lot of work and he has learned a lot about cars. And so have I even more about him.

Here is the link the project from first day until now...

Hello. Here's an interesting ' featured car' article that I saw on the homepage of another mustang site. Some people have all the luck.

Classic Mustangs are rarely seen in used car lots, so enthusiasts must venture out to find them in the most unlikely places. Veronica Sczkhlemzikhov’s wasn’t too unlikely—she found her 1964 ½ drop-top Mustang in a barn outside of Dallas, Texas, where it had rested for 25 years.

Upon first impression, she thought it was a white car, but it turned out to be skylight blue. Apparently, the original paint—still intact—had been essentially turned to chalk while sitting in the barn.

She immediately had the car trailered to Houston after purchasing it and began the restoration. Miraculously, the body was, as she claims, “rock solid,” showing no signs of rust or impact damage with all of the original sheet metal.

She repainted the vehicle, rebuilt the motor, tranny and rear end, replaced the brakes and front suspension, made some electrical fixes and replaced the generator it was running with an alternator.

“I had to chase out all of the lizards and stuff,” jokes Sczkhlemzikhov. “It needed pretty much everything.”

Once she was finished, the car became her daily driver, her grocery getter for the next ten years. Not once did it dump her on the side of the road. No wonder she named her Mustang “Hófvarpnir”— um, she can explain:

“I gave it the Hófvarpnir name because of what I use the car for,” explains Sczkhlemzikhov. “Odin's wife was named Frigg. She had three hand-maidens, Fulla, Hlin, and Gna. Gna was the one that took care of Frigg's worldly affairs, so Frigg gave her the horse, Hófvarpnir, to do all of that stuff, because Hófvarpnir could also fly. Frigg has to make sure that her kids get to school, Odin has supper waiting for him on the table, etc… just like everybody else, so, what better name for a pony than the one that does all of that stuff for a goddess?”

hnmmmm where to start?

Making a wrong turn I had to go down this street to turn around. An old shop there was sitting a 70 Cougar xr7 with a 351 C in it. leaves, flat tires...slouched looking....I bought it for 1300.00. The interior was perfect. no dents ,just aged paint. I washed it, bought 4 "used" tires....sold it for 5000.00!!!! it had 39000 origingal miles!!!

Saw this old unloved mustang convertible...sitting in a garage of a frinend ......boxes on it a bicycle....shovels rakes etc.......I camped in his front yard for 5 years.........and I LOVE IT!!!!

JUST bought a 69 GT Torino.....LOL....in a back yard....hasn't been titled since 1978!!!

My 1966 coupe that I use as my daily driver was left in the backyard of the house I bought 7 years ago. The car had a clear title that just needed to be transferred over into my name. I got very lucky.
