Default 1966 Mustang Sunroof Hardtop?

Hi,

A friend of mine told me that, back in the mid-60's, a Ford dealer in the San Francisco Bay Area contracted a company to install canvas sunroofs, similar to the ragtop VW bugs, into Mustang coupes. Does anyone know if this true? I realize that it is not a factory installation, but was a non-Ford, dealer installed option.

Thanks!

Interesting. I've never seen or heard of one, but I suppose anything's possible. Too bad it's not a Ford-licensed option--that way, it'd be much easier to find photos and production data!

Those were done by American Sunroof Co who franchised many dealers to do them when when sunroofs were all the rage. They were expensive at the time and not too many were done and they thus are rare today. They did them for all kinds of cars, not just Mustangs. I have a postcard from American Sunroof picturing a 1965 Bronze Mustang.

Hello. This subject comes up every now and then. Ford did not put sunroofs on 65/66 Mustangs. Ford did not manufacture a single component that would in any way facilitate the installation of a sunroof in a 65/66 Mustang. No dealership installed sunroofs in a new 65/66 Mustang. They would have lost money on the proposition because they would have had to make everything from scratch, and they didn't have to do anything to accomodate the tastes, opinions or wants of a customer when it came to 65/66 Mustang. If you want it, here it is, if you don't, get out of here and I'll sell to the person standing right behind you in that looooooong line of people wanting to buy a 65/66 Mustang. Sunroofs were not anything resembling a desirable option until the 70s, when American manufacturers had quit building convertibles. Nobody wanted one, the dealerships would have lost money installing one, once you explained to them what it was, because they almost certainly would not have known what you were talking about, and the cars were selling far faster than Ford could build them. It didn't happen.

Ford dealers had all of the information on sunroofs and although they did not usually install the sunroof's themselves there were many franchised dealers for American Sunroof Corp who would do it for the dealers for a fee and the Ford dealer would add their mark-up which the customer paid and the dealer made a profit on them. FOMOCO had nothing to do with making them but many were sold by Ford dealers. Most people knew what they looked like as Volkswagen used them for years and they are still popular today on the VW's. I once had a 1962 Thunderbird coupe with an all steel sliding sunroof made by American Sunroof Corp.
