Default 1968 Mustang 8" Rear end

In my quest to restore this car, I am currently working on restoring the rear end. All I wanted to do was clean the rust and gunk off the thing, paint it, replace the drum breaks and break hose and put it back on but as I was cleaning it I spun the yoke and realized that the left spline axle shaft spins better then the right one. The right one seems to to spin fine when i spin it by hand and it spins just as fast as the left when I spin it by hand but it is slower and seems to miss when I spin the yoke. This concerned me and I'm wondering if it needs to be balanced or if it is fine. Also I'm wondering if I should do anything extra to a 40 year old rear end before I put it back on that could save me from unneeded hassle in the future.

It sounds like a limited slip rear, and they are fine.I would suggest to pull the cover and inspect the gears.Replace the pinion and axle seals.Maybe go back with synthetic fluid. And on the brakes i would install new wheel cylinders and brake hardware kits.

Yeah I was planing on going all new with the breaks. And I'm thinking I'll take your advice and change out those pinion and axle seals. Ive herd of just taking a pipe and putting it through the axle housing and tapping the barring and seal out from the back. And I'm guessing the pinion seal will just pop out with like a screwdriver or something. Any advice on how to do that?

If it is a limited slip unit do not put synthetic fluid in it, those clutches are not designed to use syntehtics and may chatter or burn out from excess slippage.
