Hi.. I am interested in decoding my new '65... Here is my VIN number,, thanks Veronica! 5F08K277584... Trying to fill out the data plate on the door which is missing.... Thanks so much!
As for the rest of the information, interior, rear gears and such, unless you have a build sheet or buck tag, you will never know what is original and what is not.
need help please. anything on the vin would be helpful. or anyone else?
Did you take the time to use the link I posted?
Other than that, without a buck tag or build sheet, you will not be able to tell much of the information you are looking for from the vin. The vin can only tell you so much, which is very little.
The car is an A code 289-4V which would be an engine a real GT would have.
appreciate the help. is there anywhere else i can find a build sheet for my car? i checked under the rear seat but no luck unless there is a specific place to look under the rear seat.
They can be hidden anywhere. I have seen them under the dash. Build sheets were not even supposed to be left in the cars, but some of the line guys got lazy and just shoved them in a place that no one would see.
Hello. A 65 GT will have a dip in the dash underneath the round speedo, instead of being flat across there like on a car with the 65 Falcon-style speedo. You have to pull the instrument cluster out a little to see it. Your car is late enough to be a GT, since it was built towards the end of July in 65, but, it could also have been a non-GT with pony interior, which also would have had gauges instead of lights. The build sheets were frequently taped to the under-dash wiring harness. Hope that helps.

Hello. Most of the data from the door tag is lost forever, but there are a couple of things that are known. The car definitely came with a close-rato 4 speed top-loader, so the 'trans' code is 5. The production date of yours would have been sept. 2nd of 64, or, 02J. The D.S.O. is certainly lost forever. The body style is 76A. If you knock some of the undercoating off of the car up in the front wheel wells, up near where the hood hinge bolts stick through, the original color of the car will be underneath there. There rear axle was either a 3.50, 3.89, or 4.11, so your axle code will be either 6, 8, or 9. The 3.50 was by far the most common of the three. Hope that helps.
it does have the dip in the dash under the instrument cluster. so is it a real GT?also what rear end and gears should it have by looking at the vin? thanks.
shommel, I believe Veronica was giving info on canndy's car and not yours.
Here's what we know from your VIN:
6FO9A8O6188
6 - 1966 F - Dearborn, MI Assembly Plant 09 - 2 + 2 Fastback A - 289 4V 806188 - Unit Number on the assmbly line.
That's about it unless you find a build sheet or body buck tag. There are clues on the body for an educated guess as to what it originally came with, but I can't provide those.
I got this info from the website RedGTvert provided the link to.

Hi again. Yup, my second post was about that 65 'K' code convertible. All 65 K codes came with a close ratio 4 speed top loader, so that part isn't anything mysterious. The base model rear end gear for a K code was the 3.50, and you had the option of paying a little more and getting a 3.89 or a 4.11. What 67ragtopStang told you about your vin is correct to last detail. All that the vin tells you is year model, assembly plant, body style, engine/carb and the last six digits are the sequential production, or 'serial', number, and that is all that it will tell you. In the 65/66 model years, the only Mustangs that came with the GT package were either 'A' codes or 'K' codes, and the GT package wasn't available for purchase until early april of 65, so your vin doesn't automatically disqualify your car, but, there is no way to say for certain that your car is in fact a factory GT without a build sheet or an original window sticker. The dip in the dash means that your car came with the five dial cluster, instead of idiot lights. That would happen in one of three different ways to a 65 Mustang. Either it came with the GT package, or, it came with pony interior, or both, so maybe it's a GT, but, maybe it's a pony interior car. All of the other stuff involved in the GT package could be ordered on a car without having the GT stripes, badges and gas cap, so the presence of the frame rail reinforcement in the drivers side rear frame rail doesn't really establish GT, it merely means dual exhaust. If all of those things are present, then your car is probably a factory GT, but more than that, one couldn't really say.
