Default 1968 Mustang windshield pillar pads

Hello All,

This is my first post on your forum and I look forward to getting to know all of you classic Mustang junkies. I'm no stranger to the classic Mustang scene, but I could really use your help with a 1968 Mustang coupe I'm currently restoring.

This particular coupe has no windshield pillar pads nor the holes in the pillars for the mounting clips. I highly doubt anyone filled in the holes as it looks perfectly smooth. My car is a later production '68 with the "add-on" quarter panel reflectors. I own two other '68 mustangs (coupe and fastback) and both these cars have the pillar pads installed. All three cars were built at the San Jose assembly plant.

I always believed windshield pillar pads were installed on all '68 Mustangs. Can anyone help shed some light on this? I've never come across another '68 Mustang coupe without the pads in place.

I also have had a couple of 68's, and both have had holes in the pillar for the pads. As I recall, when I replaced them, I don't believe the pillars were painted the color of the car, so if they have paint on them, I'd say they were worked on in some way after production. I don't ever recall seeing any 67/68 without pillar pads.
Hope that helps.

jay67fast,

Thanks for the reply.

One of the car's previous owners did an interior color change from nugget gold to black and the pillars were also painted over. I may try running a magnet over where the holes should be, but based on the quality of workmanship the previous owner did with this car, I highly doubt they could have done such a great cover up job.

I guess I'll havbe to take a closer look.

My late January built San Jose coupe has the pillar pads.

I heard, have no definite answer though, that they may have been deleted late in the production run as a cost savings measure. Just like the knee pad was deleted from the dash earlier on with the cars and they changed to the bolt on Cougar side marker lights in mid Feb to save costs.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.
