Warranty Plate Decoding Hi All,
After noticing how many folks wanted to know how to decode their warranty plates (VIN#'s), I did some reading...and wanted to share. The plates are more narrow on the 66's but the info is there. The 1st # in the VIN stands for the model year. In my case, my vin# is 6R07T134959. The red 6 stands for 1966. The blue R stands for San Jose Assembly Plant. If yours is an F, that's Dearborn Michigan and if it's a T, it's Metuchen, NJ. The next 2 numbers are for your body codes:07 = Hardtop Coupe, 08=Convertible, 09 = Fastback.
The next letter stands for the engine type. In my case, the T stands for 200-1V 6 cyl..others are: A=289-4V High Comphresion, C= 289-2V V-8 Low Comphresion, K = 289 Hi-Perf. The last six digits represent the consecutive unit # assigned to the production line.
The next line of information on the warranty plate is more interesting to me. The 2nd line of info. is as follows: Body Style My info is 63A. It stands for Hardtop Coupe/Standard Interior. The next letter stands for the color. Is the plate is original, this will tell you what color your mustang was born with. In my case, the letter is T, which stands for Candy Apple Red. There were 20 colors in the 1966 models. The next line is the most important to me, the date. The # that appears before the letter here indicated the date of the month. In my case, the # is 23. The letter that folows is L. L = November 1965...in theory, my car was born on 11-23-65. A quick google search revealed that 11-23-65 was a Tuesday-A Good Day!
The next line of info. is the DSO, which stands for District Sales Office..it's probably 1 two digit #. Mine is 71. 71 = Los Angeles. All of this information comes from a book entitled: Original Mustang 1964 1/2-1966, by Colin Date.
Hope this helps someone...
