There are 2 way on early block. the first is the date code pre 68 are 289 or 260. The second way is 302 cast into the valley of the block late model 5.0 blocks have SB, 302, or 5.0 cast in the valley. There are some differnces between 289 and 302 blocks. When ford changed to the 302 they beefed the block up a little.

If I'm not mistaken, all 289 blocks had a 3 bolt harmonic balancer pulley while all 302's were 4 bolt. This would be the easiest way to tell from outside also.

to tell on the outside look at the block codes behind the starter. you should see something like c6oe-6015-ae and under that something like 6b21. the first set decodes as C= 60's decade, 6= year in that decade, o= car line and e= engine part. 6015 in the part number for an engine block but doesn't change for displacements. The ae= enginerining codes. the other set of numbers in the date code 6= year B= month feb. in this case and 21= the day. If a block is dated before 68 it is a 289 or 260. 260's went out in 64. 68 and beyond would be a 302/ 5.0.

Hello. If the casting number behind the starter begins with C8 then it's a 302 block. This should be helpful The Care and Feeding of Ponies: Search results for motor identification about identifying a 260/289. Hope that helps.
