Default '73 Grande?

"Newbie" here, will try to get an introduction together shortly, however, in the meantime.....we have been eyeing up a old mustang sitting in the back woods of a car dealer for some time. Even though we have two windveil blue Roush mustangs('05 & '07) we both love the old mustangs. Stable always has room for one more, right? Finally stopped to look at this car over the weekend. To us, it looks to be a '73 grande. Our ? today is as follows. Were the grande's the only mustang to sport the vinyl roof (there is no emblem on this one) and what else should we look for to verify if this is or is not a grande? It runs, has 75,000 miles on it, very, very little rust, top needs work, what's it worth? Thanks alot for your help and input!

They placed vinyl tops on other cars as well as the Grande. The code for the Grande is in the body code on the door as a "65F". A regular standard hardtop code which also may or may not have vinyl roof is "65D"

If it is in the condition you say it is and it is indeed a Grande you are looking @ 8K to 10K. If it has the 351, about 10% more in value. If it has the I6 deduct 25%.

Demand for the coupes is going up. They only produced 27,274 Grandes in '73.

Hope this helps. I hope you get it, any "additional ponies" in the stable can't hurt!

I drive my '73 more than my '65 for some reason.

Thanks for the info, will need to check out the body code on the door. If it's not a Grande, what would the value be? It does have a 351 Cleveland in it.

Me again. Just acquired the following info.
VIN# 3FO2H152767 and the door data sticker reads as follows.....63D Body, 6E Color and AF trim. Can you decipher what all that means? Like I said, we are "new" to the old mustangs!

based on what fastback65 said, it is a basic hardtop, 65D, while a 65F is a Grande
Still, a 351C equipped '73 is nothing to pass up!
Go for it!

That car isn't a Grande, never was, as the Grande wasn't available in the Sportsroof body style. The 63D is the code for a Sportsroof as is the"02" in the VIN. The Sportsroof is the most desirable of all the body styles.

The "3" in the VIN is the last digit of the model year, 1973.

The "F" is the plant it was built at, Dearborn, as were all 1973 Mustangs.

The "H" in the VIN says it was originally equipped with the 2v 351.

"152767" is the consecutive build number. Your car is the 52,767 Mustang to be built during the 73 model year.

The 6E color is Medium Bright Yellow (This is the color your car is/was http://www.svs.com/zim/mustang/images/73-6E.jpg )

AF is Medium Ginger Interior (biege/tan in color)

By the 152767 number your car was built during mid-late November of 72.

There were 14,428 Sportsroofs, including Machs, that had the 351 2v motor in 73.

There were 1,312 Sportsroofs with Medium Bright Yellow paint and Medium Ginger interior in 73.

There were 8,050 Sportsroofs with a factory vinyl top in 73.

Sounds like you found a nice car and worth looking into more. The 71-73s are starting to go up in value and should continue rising. They do lag in value behind the earlier Mustangs and are harder to restore as the big bodied Mustangs lack the repro parts following as the earlier ones although they are slowly getting better to as the demand rises.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

Yes the Grande was coupe only its was the more the luxury car version of the mustang. Now the sports roof aka fastback is worth more then a coupe and yes the 71-73 sports roof did have a half vinyl roof which is kinda rare but with a vinyl roof there is almost ways rust under them. One thing to look for is if its got power windows or not.Got any pictures of it?

Sorry, no pictures at the moment, but it is a very faded shade of yellow with a brown top, can't remember what color the interior is, so it seems as though it would still be pretty originial. You guys have been a GREAT help. Seems as though the $5,500 asking price would be well worth it, any thoughts? Too bad I don't have the '73 Mach I that I totalled as a 16 year old!!!

Since its a sports roof the common rust spots are cowl vent floor pan and the lower edge of the back window you won't see it unless you pull the window trim or crawl in the trunk and look. Now you can restore it back the way it came or go nuts and make it your own way thats up to you.
