The 3-speeds are very similar to the 4-speeds and you could order the car with almost any combination of parts then. But I'm not completely sure whether or not the GTs were 4-speed only.

I think the GT package could be added to just about any configuration at the dealer - no specific model associated with the GT trim. Maybe someone out there knows better.

It's difficult to tell if a car is a real GT or not because apparently the GT package was a dealer installable option. So if you had a basic A-code w/a 3-speed you could tell your friendly salesman that you want the GT package and it was installed at the dealership. The factory GT cars are somewhat easier to identify because the radiator support had stamped holes for the fog light wires to pass through.

Hello. Ford only put the GT package on 'A' code and 'K' code cars in 65/66. An 'A' code car could have any transmission, although, I've never seen a car that was a real-live factory GT that came with the three speed manual. In 65, all K codes had the 4-speed top-loader. In 66, the C4 automatic was also available on the 'K' codes, but the C4 that it got had some internal differences from the other C4s, so, if the GT in question is an 'A' code it could have anything for a tranny, if it's a 65 K code, it has a top-loader, and, if it's a 66 K code it could have a top-loader or a C4 automatic, although the automatic K codes were extremely rare.
