Default 1966 Factory Mustang GT (Again)

I have read numerous threads on identifying factory GT's. I know without a broadcast sheet it cant be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. If I check the quarter panels and I can tell absolutely that the quarter panels have not been changed and there is no filler where the trim would go in the quarter panel, isnt this proof enough? Was their an option to delete the trim on a stock Mustang?

I purchased a 1966 Mustang that has everything a factory GT should and it obviously has never been restored. I have not checked the quarter panels yet.

I also am not clear where the bracket in the frame rail is that is another indicator. Do you check it from underneath or in the trunk?

Sorry for the long post.

Yes, some Mustangs came from the factory without the quarter panel trim. I have a '66 coupe that was originally a Sprint car; it never had the trim.

There's several small details that most people miss when cloning a GT. Firstly, the holes in the radiator support for the foglight wiring should be stamped, not drilled. It won't be a perfect hole; if you've ever seen a pneumatic punch work, they typically distort a little bit of the surrounding metal, leaving small "burrs" on the outside diameter of the hole.

Also, the exhaust brackets are also helpful in identifying a real GT. A factory GT will have reinforcement plates on the inside of the floorpan, near the rear seatbelts. Pull the rear seat, and the difference will be obvious. These plates were meant to handle the extra exhaust hangers put in place on GT's.

Finally, look behind the rear valence, at the framerails. There should be a bracket toward the rear of either framerail; these are your "trumpet" exhaust support brackets. 99% of the time, people don't get this detail when cloning a GT--these brackets were put in before the trunk floor was installed on factory GTs; to replicate this, you'd have to cut the trunk floor away to gain access to the inside of the framerail.
