Default 1968 Mustang Restoration - Original or Custom?

So I just purchased a 1968 Mustang. I'm in the process of restoring it. But before I go any further, I just want to know if I should keep it original - OR - Trick it out a little bit?

The question that comes up all the time.

It's really tough for us to tell you what to do. What you should do is make the car the way you want it to be.

The only time that people recommend going dead stock is when you have a highly desirable rare car, basically when the value will be severly hurt.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

As stated in the above reply, if its not a very desirable car or rare model, do with it what pleases you. After all its your car and your $ .

My thoughts are if the car is pretty much intact as original and a nice solid example (no major structural repair, etc) then I would lean toward keeping it original with any modifications being ones that bolt on and can be easily un-done if desired.

Now, if the car has already been altered or needs any substantial restoration or frame work then it is pretty much all open.

Either way it is your car and make sure you are comfortable with it and by all means have fun and enjoy it.

I agree with robotworkshop that you should keep your mods to bolt on. If you are going with the serious horsepower of a stroker motor, you may want to beef up the structure a bit.

Is it a Coupe or Fastback?
What will be your use when finished: daily driver, weekend car, car show queen, 1/4 mi., autocross?
Mine will be a DD + car shows, some fun racing, since it'll be a DD 90% of the time safety was my first concern so I added newer seats with headrests (recovering to match '67 seats).

Next will be 3 point seat belts, disc brakes and probably PB. For comfort (wife) indash A/C will come next.
Most of my mods could be put back to stock if I choose as I keep all my original parts.
I originally planned to stay stock but couldn't enjoy the car as the no-power drum brakes can be plain scary in the rain or a panic stop.

Went through the same delima a few months ago. But decided that it's my car and it's going to be what I want it to be. Either way you can't go wrong, but if it's yours I always think it should be what you want it to be. Good luck with it.

I was looking at selling the 68;. It's a Notchback. It looks as though it used to be a turquoise green, but then they just painted it dark blue. It has dark blue & Turqouise interior. Has a Straight 6 and what appears to be the 3 speed tranny. But the Engine is originally yellow which is telling me that it is a Mercury engine (If I'm correct.) I had the Vin and everything... But i cant find the title. It needs some love of course. I need to touch up some sports on the 1/4's where it's rusting and probably replace the deck lid and hood (I can fix em, but it'll be a lot of work.) The doors of course have the normal rust in the bottom corner, but it's not bad. I'm looking to sell it. And as far as cost goes, All I have to pay for is the supplies, because I can do the labor myself. I just don't know if I should rebuild the Straight 6 and Single barrel carb and put it back in, or if I should just put a V8 in? So many options

Absolutely agree, it's your car, build it the way you want it. Coupe w/ straight 6, I would mod it.
