i have a 1965 gt A code(225 horsepwr) 289 4v with a 4 speed posi rear end. it has been totally rebuilt to specs except that i added a flex fan and a edlebrock 600 carb. is there any more cheap easy effective ways to gain more horsepower? im not looking to spend big bucks just something to gain some horse and im not looking for a racing machine. please help.

what do you have for a rear ring and pinion ratio. I have a '95 gt that originally had 2.73's in it and i took them out and put 3.73's in and it was a night and day difference...it wont give you more horses but itll help out with a little quicker take off...i dont know much about the older stangs but i know im really glad i put those 3.73's in mine...the best part is it can be done for few hundred bucks for a night and day difference? anyways, just thought you might wanna look into it

Hello. Some headers would help, if you still have the cast iron exhaust manifolds.

Hi again. You're too kind. If your car has power steering, you would want to go with some shorty headers and possibly a drop bracket for the steering cylinder. Hedman makes some pretty nice shorty headers, but I'm sure that there are others, as well. If it has manual steering, I would go with some tri-y headers, just because they fit in there without too much trouble and they were available 'back in the day', but that's just me. There are many options for headers. If you still have the cast iron intake, an Edelbrock performer would lighten the car up some and allow it to breathe a little bit more efficiently. If you do still have the cast iron intake, and swap out for the Edelbrock, between that and the headers, you're probably picking up about 25 hp, along with being a little snappier as far as throttle response. Hope that helps.

Headers would definately help. Maybe 15-20HP. Hooker, Hedman, they are all similar. A free flowing exhaust would help as well. Mustangs Unlimited sells a complete exhaust with flowmaster mufflers, that is made to mate up with headers. Another cheap way to add H/P. Open up your cylinder heads. Take them off, take them to a machine shop, then have them port matched. That is good for another 20-25 H/P. Definately go with aftermarket intake unless you want to stay stock. If you don't want to stay stock you can go with a different CAM, aluminum heads. The possibilities are endless. Take care, have fun with it.

Not an increase in HP, but a definite increase in performance would be an electronic ignition. I have the Pertronix set up in my 66 coupe and I love it!
