Question 1966 Mustang Coupe with 2v carb, would this have a 289 Engine?

I have locate a 66 coupe at a salvag with 2v carb and I am wondering if this a 289 engine. The guy who is selling does not know if it's 289 or 302. How can I determine what I have before I purchase? Also, I can not find a warranty tag on the driver side door. Is there an additional location where I can determine what the original build was? I know the car is a true 289 build because it has 5 lugs and the tranny has a large bellhouse attached to the engine. However, I want to know all of the details such as what color the vechile originally was, the date it was built, where it was shipped to, and the type rear it has. Also, where is the vin nuber located on the engine? I looked at the manifold and it has number stamped there but it does not match the vin. Can any one help me?

The engine number is located on the lower right ridge of the engine block. You will have to remove the starter to see it, there is a ridge just above the oil pan mount, all the way to the rear of the engine. For a '66, it should start with C4, C5 or C6, this starts Ford part numbers, the 'C' is '60 and the next number is the year. They didn't start manufacturing the 302 until '68 when it replaced the 289.
Search the net for 'decode ford vin', etc. and you'll find all the info. on that.

To find the original stats look up the vin, a dealer or the web can help with that. For what's actually on the car, you'll need to look at the parts and get their numbers, the car is 42 years old so there's a good chance it isn't all original.

If there isn't a door tag on the driver's side, look on the inside edge of the top of the engine bay on the driver's side where the fender is bolted down, and you'll see the VIN stamped in the unibody. That and the door tag should match, although if it's a replacement door more than likely you wouldn't have that tag. Plug that # into any decoder, and bingo - the basics of how the car rolled off the assembly line. If you want extreme details, take that # and get a Marti report - it'll tell you everything about that car.

I think I read somewhere on here that Veronica mentioned there might be a third location for that VIN #, but I may have dreamed that...so don't count on the third place. I vaguely remember it being a state-issued VIN riveted on the pinch weld of the cowl, drivers side; something issued based on the title of the car...I read that somewhere, you might just ignore this last paragraph though.

Coming soon - disc brakes, electronic ignition and a whole host of other stuff I forgot to mention. The list goes on and on. Basically, it's my new toy

You can't do a Marti report on that car, he doesn't have records before 67.

Looking at the VIN number the 5th digit is the engine code. Codes of C, A and K are 289 engines. True K codes are very desirable, that is the HiPo motor.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.
