Default 1967 fastback..vin # says 01? not 02!..?

Hello,i have been sitting on this project for awhile,The car was stripped of the engine and other parts then forgotten in a barn for 25-30 years.Paperwork lost long ago.I have to get a new set of paperwork and realized that the vin code on the top of the front apron(only one i could find) says it should be a hardtop not a fastback. Now i have had a builder look and tell me the front clip is not from another mustang, mabye he was wrong or could it have been stamped wrong? The motor vehicle department might give me a hard time,i dont know.Any thoughts on the subject would be apreciated

Wow that's a nice platform to start from whatever the vin problem is.

It is possible that it had been hit and they did a very good job replacing the arpon at all the factory spot welds. It's also possible that it was a factory mis-stamp.

Do you have the driver's door with the original tag? It would have the VIN too. Check the aprons on both sides for a VIN too.

You could order a Marti report on that VIN and see what it comes back as. If the color and options are wrong along with the body style then the inner fender was replaced long ago in the car's life.

I would go to the DMV and get the paperwork in your name before doing work on the car. I would just write it down as it is with the wrong digit and not bring it to thier attention. As long as that VIN isn't registered elsewhere then it would be easiest to just have the car with that "wrong" VIN on it if there's no way to find the correct one if it had been swapped.

What VIN is on the title? Does it match the one on the apron?

I know it was in a little fender bender, i never thought about that scenerio, more likely than a mis-stamp.
I have the doors but the tag is gone, and the other apron is blank.
I have never heard of a Marti report but it sounds like a great idea i'll google it.
Getting the paperwork before doing anything is a smart suggestion unfortunantly i was younger when i got it and not so smart
I have ran the vin at the nearest car insurance place and nothing comes up.
The project has been stalled for a few years, but i will pull up my socks and get the ball rolling on the paperwork, thank you.

Here's a link to Marti Marti Auto Works - concours quality parts at hobbyist prices !

He is the only one who can give you the info as he purchased all of Ford's production records from 1967 until ???.

Very good individual to deal with, his "company" is family run as his wife helps out. I have ordered several deluxe reports from him and talked on the phone once. Even have gotten replacement door tags from him.

I'm not familair with how the Canadian DMVs work. Since the "wrong" VIN comes back clean I'd personally use that one as it would be more hoops to jump through to get a state issued VIN if I was in your shoes in this country.

I would have Marti make a replacement door tag so you'll have one other matching "VIN" on the car, even if that tags other info doesn't match the car. The DMV won't look at colors, axle or DSO info.

This seems to be the easiest way to get this car legally registered again as it's correct VIN is long gone.

Like I said, get all the paperwork sorted out and in your name before putting anything into this car. You don't want to spend money and time and then find out they won't let you register it.

Maybe someone converted the car to a Fastback? Have you check for welds behind the interior trim panels and in the trunk?

Do you have that Blue '68 FB as a parts car? What's the numbers on that?

The blue 68 was a write off,i was able to take whatever i wanted but the shell,i do recall that it had the correct digits for body style

I didn't realize someone could,or would convert one...i will take the interior panel off and see if its a hybrid, that would really SUCK.

Thanks for your two bits.

People have made coupes in to a fastback just takes the sheet metal and interior to do it.Reason being they made a ton of coupes not many fastbacks and convertibles. As long as you can tag it i wouldn't care what the vin says you know.

I was just about to look behind the rear panel and the people at marti reports called(awful timing). The VIN i submitted is bad, whatever that means, they requested i take a rubbing and try again.I find a photo works better but the # looks the same to me
I decided to change the 01 to 02 what the hell?a third try only cost 5$bucks but they will want a photo and/or rubbing.

I'd be honest with Marti and send the rubbing. He may verify that it was mis-stamped at the factory.

This will CYA when you go to register it.
