Default 1967 mustang having a huge spacing issue

I recently purchased a 67 mustang coupe that originally had a 200 ci. but has been upgraded to a 289. From everything I have seen I believe that it is the original transmission from the 200 (3-speed). The problem I am having is the flywheel and starter scraping on each other. I took both out and they were both completely torn apart. I replaced both pieces but there is still a scraping. The car will turn over but I obviously don't want to grind through another set of parts. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Don't know what to say, haven't run into this yet.

The one thing that comes to mind is if someone replaced the starter with the wrong one. Basically put an automatic starter when you should have a standard tranny one.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

it's not the most desirable option for the classic mustangs but an easy thought-free way to get around this is drop the starter and install an electric starter.

I have seen many starter problems on automatics transmissions buy not many on standard trannees “first of all the 200cid had a small bell housing witch is considerably smaller than the 289 cid mill, so when they made the swap I’m sure the bell housing and flywheel had to be changed on the original three speed, if IT IS THE ORIGINAL ,just thinking back I’ll have to research to make sure the numbers are correct there is 165 tooth ring gear and a 174 tooth they both call for the 3124 starter on a 289 and 302 ,the 351cid mills use the 3124 and a 3165, the 3165 has a longer housing and the drive on the 3165 when park sits out and will make contact with the ring gear when the engine starts. Remove the starter there should be some tell tell marks on the starters housing where the drive sits ,if the marks are on the neck of the starter, this is not the correct starter, Now if the car will start from popping the clutch get it running and see if you still hear the noise, I WOULD SAY THE STARTER IS NOT CORRECT FOR YOUR APPLICATION OR THE STARTER SOLENIOD IS HANGING UP note both starters look the same and have and have two holes for mounting, good luck I hope you can understand what I’m trying to say”

I think I'm understanding what your saying. The car will turn over by itself but I did have a problem turning it over because I eventually had to drop the clutch after pushing it. I might have to look at the bell housing to see if it was replaced, because I have a feeling that it wasn't

If you don't want to change the bell housing, you could try making a shim between the starter and bell housing. A small thickness at a time until the starters far enough back to clear the fly wheel. Try with washer first to find the right thickness the shim needs to be and fabricate a shim.
Just a thought.

One more thing you might want to check, when they did the swap did they put the bell housing spacer plate back? This will be between the bell housing and engine block.
Good Luck

I will look into the bellhousing, where should I look for the product number to see if its the 289 or 200s. I did see the spacer on there when the car was pulled apart. Would a shim be a workable fix for a long period or would I need to look into the bellhousing immediately? Thanks for all the help.
