Default 1969 Mustang Mach 1 Restoration in progress

Well, now that I've introduced myself, here's a brief run down of what what's being done to this car. It's an M code Dearborn car built in the first week of July 1969, so I'm assuming that it would've been the last month of production for the model year?

The car came to me in September of this year, and the owner wanted to restore the car back to original appearance and add a few goodies to make it his own. The original 4V Cleveland was long gone, so it was decided to locate a 428 and have some real fun. It's currently being built, will have Edelbrock aluminum heads roller rockers, cam, and a bunch of other goodies. The C6 is also being rebuilt and tweaked to withstand the added hoesepower, and out back the 9" has been stuffed with a new Auburn unit and 3:50 gears.

Appearance wise, this car will be restored in a concours type fashion, if for some reason he ever wants to locate an original powertrain. So the markings, labels, and all the other details that this car had when new will be reproduced as close as humanly possible. Having said that, it will be a driver, and with the add ons it certainly isn't going to fool an expert, but at least it'll be a fun car to kick around in. It will be finished in it's original color, which was Candy Apple Red. Wheels are Magnum 500's.

Condition wise.....well, there's more new than old as far as sheet metal goes. Once it was stripped, I found old damage from being rolled, and hit in the front and rear end. Three paint jobs, lots of rust, and lots of body filler.....everywhere.

Pics will come as soon as I figure out how to upload them.

Yep, that was within the last month of production as the factories would shut down and retool during the beginning of August.

That sounds like a real nice car you're doing there even down to applying factory markings. It's something I originally wasn't interested in doing to my 68 but changed my mind on some parts as I restored them as it's much more of a challenge than doing any other type of a resto.

You will fool some people who wouldn't know to look at the 5th digit of the VIN to figure out the motor is wrong.

I'm glad to see the guy is that interested in the car and willing to drive it too.

For pics you could resize them and upload them as attachments or just do what I normally do and upload them to Photobucket or another free photo site (Webshots is another) and post a link here.

Jay, thanks for the reply, I'm going to spend some time here today and hopefully get some pics posted.

Regarding this car, I did find some interesting things. In my research, there appears to be generally accepted guidelines regarding underbody colors depending on the plant. One of the most common I found was red oxide primer on the underside of the front chassis, overprayed with black. This particular car was bare metal, with remnants of yellow overspray where the painter cleaned out his gun on the underbody prior to applying the chasis black. I've documented it for the owner and will reproduce the bare metal look, but I'm going to skip the yellow, it just looks too ugly. Out back, the rest of the underbody was a slop grey.
