Hi, new here and was looking for help in determining a value for this 1968 Coupe that I stumbled across that is for sale for $6,500. Owner thinks they have a collectible and I just don't think a 68 65A is. VIN is 8T01C124867 and the door data plate is 65A M 2U 07M 24 2 W
They don't have much history on the car, they say the 289 V8 is original and they don't know when it was painted. I think if i had some production numbers to show them that it was a pretty common model, I could probably get the price down.
Hard to see all the options, I see factory A/C and a turn signal hood which was phased out 1/2 way through '68 I believe (just to use up the left over '67 hoods). Can't tell in the pics if it's got PS or PB or manual disc?
I see the interior is plain, no console, no deluxe options (dash/ doors/ seats). Have you checked the floor pans from underneath at least? If the rubber plugs are missing from the seat mounting holes you can see if you can dig any rust scales out. Check around the battery tray for rust/corrosion, the batt. has usually leaked at some point in 40yrs.
If you like the soft top is another issue, I avoided them as other cars I had they were just moisture traps for rust.
Overall looks like a clean car - in pictures...is the paint job good or a rush job looking?

I believe it only has power steering and I'm going to see it in person next week sometime. Thanks
That's not the turn signal hood on that car. Look at the exterior, no cut outs. The understructure was the same for both hoods.
Mustangshorty, I responded to your PM already, but seeing it has air cond I can give you this info too,
1 of 47,037 coupes with air in 68
1 of 57,213 with vinyl roof
This car does seem Southern to me as I already mentioned the car being from Florida or Alabama originally. The original white/white/white color scheme and air kinda supports that. That would have been a unique car too with a triple white color scheme with the white vinyl roof. The engine also looks original and unmolested.
That shade of blue isn't an original color offered in 68. Too dark to be Diamond Blue and too rich and non metallic to be Brittany. The other shades in 68 were much darker than that.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project
Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping that it spent most of its life down south somewhere instead of here in NY. I'm not sure that the white vinyl top was original to the vehicle. Owner says too that there is a Ford dealership tag on the rear that says "Ray Hunt" "Daytona Beach"
That Cobra was originally sold there in Daytona Beach, same place that Mustang was. Looks like we now know the exact area that the Mustang lived in when new. Clicking on the paperwork in the Cobra link there's a paper from Ray Hunt with the address too. It does look like Ray Hunt isn't around anymore though.
It is fun tracking history of vehicles

This is just my opinion, but if it's a 68 with little to no rust, an engine that runs strong, good transmission, frame and good brakes. Then I don't think you'd be getting messed over if you payed 6500 for it. All depends on if that's the car you want or not. The paint looks good as does the interior, I'm not a fan of the soft top, but that's a personal taste. I know that my car had a lot of exterior rust and needed engine work and people were offering over 5k for it in Florida.

Really tough to find a rust free classic car in NY. Hope there is not alot of hidden problems under that paint.

Got the standard Marti report on it.
Vehicle was ordered with the following options:
C-4 Cruise-O-Matic Transmission
7.35 X 14-4 Ply rated tires
White sidewall tires
Goodyear brand name tires
Power steering
Air Conditioner - Selectaire
Tinted glass
Front seat headrests
Heavy duty battery
Car was actually produced on December 18, 1967 - eleven days behind schedule.
No sign of white vinyl top option there, so no triple white I guess.
One thing I see in the photos of concern is, the bottom of the Passenger Side A pillar. It looks like shoddy bodywork after an accident there. If you still want the car, be sure to point that out while negotiating.

Yup, there was some fillr there. Just got back from seeing it in person. Spent about an 1 1/2 going over it and found body filler in 4 spots on the passenger side and 1 spot on the drivers side rear quarter. The trunk had some surface rust in it. Frame rails and most of the undercarriage looked pretty good. Looked up underneath where the air ducts were and saw some rust, good chance that the cowl was rusted out. Didn't get a chance to pull rugs up to check the floorboards, kinda got funny looks from the old lady when I asked if I could, so I didn't bother. Car was definately a 20 footer, about a 4 on a scale of 6 with 6 being the worst or a parts car.
I guess you passed on that one. I bought my car in southern California, 'cause it's hard to find rust free or low rust old cars in Massachusetts.

This car started its life down in Daytona Beach but I guess it spent more time up here in NY than I thought. It would be a decent summer driver, but not for the price she was asking.
