For me it was way back in the late 70's. I saw a white 68 Mustang for sale that I thought some back yard mechanic had put a 1969 hood scoop on it and painted a big black strip on the hood to make the hood scoop match. The car was for sale for a ridiculous amount of money, like $1500.00. I was only like 15 or 16 so I didn't know it was a 1968-1/2 428 cobrajet R code. If only I could go back in time and buy that car.
Yep, 2 months ago. I was shopping for my first car on my own (my others had been hand-me-downs from older siblings. I found an '03 GT 5 speed, blue for $9500 and I just couldn't talk my dad into buying it. After that one sold I couldn't find any sticks anywhere and had to settle for an automatic after looking for months
yep .......... around 75 or 76 a friends uncle had a Mustang for sale $2500 ........... i went and looked at it ............... it was a Boss 429 !!!!! ...... I think it was grabber orange but its been a while .;............. I didnt buy it and I've always regretted it .
About the same time I was at a junkyard looking for parts for a 66 fairlane I was sticking a 351C in ................ there was a Shelby GT 500 body with no motor or tranny .............. $700 .............. if I hadnt already started the fairlane project I would have bought that as well .................. i SHOULD have bought it anyway ................... somehow I knew then those shelbys would be worth a lot some day ,but I was livin paycheck to paycheck at the time ..... 8^(
Well, it's not as early as your stories... but around 1996 our friend was buying a house, just got married, they were expecting and wanted to unload his immaculately kept 1990 GT Vert - Red with the white top. He keeps his rides mint. Well, we were getting married in '97 and thinking about buying a condo or house and although he offered it to us, it was heartbreaking but we just thought the money would be needed as a nest egg... We regret - to this day, not buying his Mustang. He drops by and we all cry... he's getting a divorce now and wishes he had the stang...and my husband is keeping his eye out for just the right one...

Oh the pain! Too many I care to think about too much. All types of cars. A 69 ram air 428 Cougar convertible xr7 - $2500 (I was in high school and barely paid for my 68 Mustang) back in 1980. A 71 charger, 440 with EVERY option except the 6pak - $5500 in 1995. Also, in 1980, I was in a junk yard looking for parts for my 68 Mustang and what did I find? Not 1 but 2 Superbirds. One was red, the other sublime green. They could be had for $1500 each, my choice. Too bad I was in high school and had $0.
I knew where a yenko nova sat in a field was a 396 4 speed kept getting the its not for sell story i even offered him 10 grand cash for it.Two years ago i go by there the car is gone the old man that owned it died and his kids sold it for scrape i almost cried. Some people have no clue what they have rotting away in there yard or driveway.I know where a 57 belair sits it has the fuel injection on it kept getting the im gonna restore it one day story it ain't been touched in 13 years i know of.
I passed up a basic 69 Sportsroof in the summer of 2000. I had recently purchased my current 68 coupe and couldn't swing another car easily.
The Sportsroof was for sale at a cruise and needed a bit of work but some was already done and looked well. It was just a 302 car and had new interior, tires, gastank, and the whole engine compartment had been repaired and redone. The car still was wearing it's original looking Silver Jade paint with some scratches and dings and needed rear trunk drop off and lower quater work.
The asking price?......$7000!!!
I'm pissed to this day I didn't give it more thought, 7k for a complete, running & driving 69 Sportsroof that's already had some work done to it! Silver Jade is one of my favorite colors they offered in 69 too.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project
Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

I"ve been really lucky..... and I"ve missed a few. But the biggest to date is a 65 SS Malibu a 6 month old full restore done, it had been hit in the rear HARD. I had a 65 SS I needed parts for.......the car went on ebay for less than 2 grand.....
I could have finished my car with the parts and sold the engine out of the thing for near that!!!

I wanted a new Mustang in 1970 but my wife said why not a Cougar, so I went out and I got my Cougar with the 351 Cleveland engine. At the time it was OK but looking back at it today, I should have bought the Stang. Then again in 2004 I wanted a Mach 1 and time went by and I missed that one too, so in '06 I settled for a Mustang GT, still wishing for that Mach 1.
First was a Boss nine for 7500 in the early 80s,Ferrari 246 for the same price about 6 months later. 1982 I was looking for the back glass for my 65 fastback and the guy with the donor car had a 66 GT350H for 10 grand. Oh well!

I had 2. I got my 1996 Mustang in about March. Well, the car I was going to get instead was a 1999 dark metallic green 35th anniversery editon GT convertible with a tan top, tan leather, and a 5 speed manual. Well, the day me and my dad were going to go up to buy it, (I needed him to help with the paperwork), he got sick and we couldn't go. Well, about 3 hours after we would have gotten the car if we had gone, someone else bought the car for their 16 year old daughter who ended up wrapping it around a tree the next day.
Number 2 wasn't actually a Mustang. My brothers birthday is in July. Well, for his birthday he decided to have a paintball party. Coming home from the party I saw a 1964 Mercury Monterey with the breezeway rear window for sale. (For those that don't know or don't remember, the "Breezeway Window" was Mercury's backwards rear windscreen that rolled down when you pressed a button.) It had a 390 V8, automatic, new interior, dual 2.5" flowmasters, and only one rust spot on the drivers side quarter where a piece of debris had bounced off the road and hit it.It also has power steering and power brakes. It had real wire wheels on it. It was originally coral red (pink) with black interior, but the original owner who was also the original owner, didn't like pink on that big of a car and had it painted white. The only stupid thing done to it was that the previous owner had attached a stupid looking eagle to the grille. That and it was missing a small chrome strip on off the side that I have in my garage and a damaged taillight lense. The guy selling said he would trade it for my 1996 Mustang. I desperately wanted to trade it, but my mum said "No, you shouldn't have 2 classic cars."

Oh my god... my two dream cars! I know you wake up every day with a knot in your stomach.
oooh, about an hour from my house, today, at this moment, sit a '69 Boss 429, complete, with only some bodywork on the driver's fender needed, and a '68 Cobrajet, without its engine, both under a tarp in a field with three other classic mustangs and about 250 engines. He won't sell. Smart Man.

IT was 1983, I was only 12. But the day still haunts me. This isn't a "should have bought" story, but it messes you up emotionally just like all the other stories on this thread. My dad and I were at a local junkyard and they have on the flat bed truck a 1966 Ford Fairlaine GTA. Complete with the 390 and everything.
Some lady's father owned it and passed away...she wanted it out of the way because she was auctioning off the estate. It only needed tires!!
They crushed it right in front of us. We both cried.
