Default What funny or interesting paint stories do you have?

on my 67 coupe I requested the paint job to be my life long dream of midnight blue with pearl white racing stripes. Keep your negative opinions to yourself, this was long debated and I've heard all the opinions already. So when they said the paint was done, there was a moment of shock when I realized the mistake (took about.001 second). The car was an awesome color of pearl white w/ blue stripes! . The guy was immediately apologetic and cool about fixing it as fast as possible. I found it funny as hell and have pictures just for laughs.

But this isn't the worst I've heard. A guy I used to know had just painted his old chevy a bright red and left in his barn that night to finish drying. Came back in the next day to find an owl had completely crapped right in the center of the hood. NASTY one too. The barn now has an entire clip of 44 cal. holes (he missed every shot) in the roof.

What other stories are out there?

We painted the 66 ourselves and were putting back together last weekend and had the fender leaning against the house while we put on the inner fender. The dog knocked it over and scratched the clearcoat and I am not sure if it went to the base.
Plan on trying to cut and buff it out. Luckily we put 4 coats of clear on so we have some good mil thickness. Probably in Springtime have to rough it up with 600 on and shoot a couple coats of clear on the fender again.
Anyone want a dog?

My First Enamel Paint Job- Back in the early 80s, I was finishing up my Mustang for the first time. As I was looking to improve my talents I figured I'd try enamel. The prior paint jobs were all laquer for it's "user friendly" application. Being my first enamel paint job I listened to ALL the input about the tricky paint and how clean the surface needed to be. I did the doors, front valance, deck lid in the basement. All turned out really well. Oh yeah the fumes were delightful ask my ex-wife. The hood was too big and needed to be painted in the garage. I put it in a used the adjoining kitchen door for ventilation...and a fan sucking the air out from beneath the garage door. So I do my ritualistic prep job. But instead of using my old tack rag I used a new one. Yup nice and clean. When I applied the paint you could see exactly were and how it was wiped. Arghh! Iwas so pissed I took a shop rag, soaked it with laquer thinner and wiped the whole mess off. I had worse problems with contamination of the surface of the body. Had to use a different primer/sealer for the body and I'll never forget this lesson either. Even though it's a solid color....don't expect whatever is under it to NOT show through. I had a tu-tone red Mustang because of different primer colors.
I'm now about to that point again some twenty years later.

I had a 76 ford elite and it broke down 2 days before my prom. I borrowed my aunts vega station wagon. It was a ugly yellow. I went to the auto parts store and bought 30 cans of blue spray paint. That night I washed and painted it. Went to the prom and the day after I tryed to give the car back to my aunt. She blew a head gasket and I ended up buying the car off of her for $200 dollars.

I had to paint car outside. Cant believe I got away with it. The first spray on the hood and a major sized bug decided to make it home walked all along hood, Dryed, scuffed, re-shoot and then it rained on it. Florida- go figure- round three got it right. Since I painted panels at different times shot doors and rear quarters. Still drying , our cat decided to have a look. if you look real carefully I have paw prints along left door on top. When living in Connecticut long time ago a Buddy I knew sprayed a hood for another guy, we loaded it in a hay truck while still tacky, looked like a farm tractor when it got it home- hay stuck to it every where, all silly yet not comical at the time

Thanks for taking a look at the booth and your feedback.
Be sure to do it safely and take your time.
No paint job is worth making yourself sick or getting hurt.
Oh yeah, we are going to keep the dog...

In 1984 I was in school and sharing an apartment with Bob. He came home one day and said that the DMV wouldn't pass his 1974 Ford for inspection because it was rusted through on all the fenders. The next day he came home and proudly showed off his newly inspected car... a true "Twenty Footer." He had duct taped all the fenders and spray painted over the duct tape. What a country! :-)
